AVIt is impossible to convey this in a photo. You are standing in the middle of the once densely populated district of Jobar, which, as far as the eye can see, is nothing but ruins. A synagogue, a mosque, houses, a hospital, and a school with a blackboard on which formulas drawn in chalk are still visible have been destroyed to their foundations. It is literally 15 minutes from the center of Damascus, but you were in a crowded square where there was lively trade. An entire district of the city was destroyed from the air. Methodically, day after day, over a period of time. Russian aircraft bombed Syrian cities. In Douma, the Russians promised a green corridor, but when the evacuation began, they dropped chemical weapons on the people. Then people in spacesuits came and destroyed the evidence. That is why Syrians don’t like Russia. And we understand where the Russians trained their skills in striking civilian populations.
All these years, Syrians have been risking their lives to collect and pass on evidence of crimes. Confirming the use of chemical weapons required a whole special operation carried out by volunteers from the White Helmets movement. Russia and its allies vetoed the Security Council’s decision to refer the Syrian case to the International Criminal Court seven times. Therefore, little Liechtenstein formed a coalition of states and, together with Syrian civil society organizations, pushed through the creation of a special UN mechanism in the UN General Assembly. They have more than a million documented episodes in their archives. The people of Syria have a huge demand for justice. We met with the National Commission for Transitional Justice, who told us how they will now deal with this step by step.

BJI visited Jobar, a district in eastern Damascus that was once full of life — families, children playing in the streets, neighbors gathering, laughter echoing between buildings. Today, it stands as a silent witness to unimaginable destruction.
I’ve seen the Syria war through media for years — photos, videos, headlines. But nothing, absolutely nothing, could have prepared me for what it’s like to stand here in person. The scale of the devastation is overwhelming. Entire neighborhoods reduced to rubble. Streets that once carried everyday life now carry the scars of war.
Walking through Jobar was one of the heaviest experiences of my life. I felt an indescribable mix of sorrow and disbelief. It’s impossible to fully understand the suffering, loss, and resilience of the Syrian people, but being here gave me a small glimpse into the reality they’ve lived through.
This was once home for so many — places where children grew up, where families shared meals, where life unfolded day by day. Now, it’s all gone. Destroyed. The silence here speaks louder than words ever could. 💔🇸🇾
