ALGet Ready With Me: A Brief History of the Scottish Kilt 🏴
The Scottish kilt is history, identity and rebellion woven into one garment.
The earliest form of the kilt, known as the féileadh mór or great kilt, appeared in the 16th century. It was a full-length garment, belted at the waist and draped over the shoulder, practical for life in the Highlands. Over time, it evolved into the more tailored féileadh beag (small kilt), which is what we know today.
In the 18th century, after the Jacobite uprisings, the British government banned Highland dress under the Dress Act of 1746. Wearing a kilt became an act of defiance and a symbol of loyalty to culture and country. The ban was lifted in 1782 and what followed was a romantic revival of Highland traditions that helped preserve them to this day.
Every element of the Highland dress carries meaning:
- Tartans represent clans, regions, or modern personal identity.
- Sporrans (the pouch) are practical but also ceremonial.
- Ghillie brogues, kilt hose and flashes complete the look with their own traditional functions.
Today, wearing a kilt connects us to centuries of Scottish heritage and I feel a real sense of pride every time I put mine on. It’s a Holyrood Weathered tweed tartan from @kinlochanderson 🏴
