Most people are told to just “avoid acidic foods,” but that’s an incomplete strategy that leaves patients confused. LPR happens because your “Anti-Reflux Barrier”—specifically your Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES)—isn’t closing properly, allowing aerosolized pepsin to irritate your delicate throat tissue. Here is exactly how I help my clients start their LPR healing journey: 1️⃣ Activate the “LES Lock”: Your diaphragm acts as an external anchor for your reflux valve. Try 5 minutes of diaphragmatic breathing about an hour after meals. Clinical studies, like those by Halland et al. (2020), show this physical exercise can actually increase valve pressure and prevent backflow. 2️⃣ Address the “Pepsin” Problem: When you have LPR, digestive enzymes (pepsin) can get stuck in your throat and reactivate every time you sip something acidic. Use an Alginate therapy after trigger meals or before bed; it creates a physical seaweed “raft” that acts as a plug to keep those enzymes in your stomach where they belong. 3️⃣ The 4-Hour Buffer: Gravity is a mechanical necessity for LPR. For me (and so many of my clients), it looked like: • Constant throat clearing • Feeling like something was stuck in my throat • Hoarseness or voice fatigue • A dry cough that wouldn’t go away • “Post-nasal drip” that never improved No burning. No obvious reflux. So it got brushed off… while the root issue kept getting worse. Here’s the truth: LPR is still reflux, it’s just reaching higher into the throat and airways. And popping antacids or PPIs doesn’t address why it’s happening in the first place. In my practice, we look at: • Stomach acid levels (not just “too much” 👀) • Digestive function + motility • Gut imbalances contributing to pressure + reflux • Nervous system regulation (yes, this matters more than you think) •Histamine Because when you actually address the root cause… those “random” symptoms finally start to make sense and improve.
