Hippolyte Fizeau: The Man Who Measured Light’s Speed on Earth (1849)
In 1849, a brilliant French physicist named Armand Hippolyte Louis Fizeau (1819–1896) made history by being the first person to measure the speed of light on Earth — using nothing more than a lamp, a rotating cogwheel, and a mirror miles away.
Fizeau set up his experiment near Paris, sending a beam of light through the gaps of a toothed wheel toward a distant mirror about 8 km away. When the wheel was still, the reflected beam returned through the same gap and was visible. But as he spun the wheel faster, the returning light began to hit the teeth instead of the gaps — vanishing from view.
By carefully adjusting the wheel’s rotation speed and counting how many teeth passed while the light made its round trip, Fizeau calculated that light took only a few millionths of a second to travel there and back.
His final value was about 313,000 km/s, astonishingly close to the modern measurement of 299,792 km/s — an error of less than 5%, achieved 175 years ago with purely mechanical tools!
This experiment proved two groundbreaking ideas:
1️⃣ Light travels at a finite speed, not instantaneously as once believed.
2️⃣ It can be measured on Earth — not just astronomically.
Fizeau’s work laid the foundation for later experiments by Léon Foucault (1850), Albert Michelson (1879), and ultimately for Einstein’s theory of relativity (1905) — where the speed of light became the ultimate cosmic speed limit.

The result? A show of completely different visual illusions... and none of them are real.
The ruler in shadow seems to sway smoothly. The one in bright light looks distorted and frenetic, as if it were made of rubber. What's happening here is the moiré effect.
The moiré effect appears when two repetitive patterns-like the ruler's fine lines and the camera's pixel grid-overlap.
Your brain and the lens can't interpret it correctly, and what you see is an illusory visual interference: waves, distortions, and movements that don't actually exist.
Direct light makes this worse by increasing contrast and emphasizing the ruler's tiniest details, which creates clashing patterns with the camera sensor.
In shadow, lower contrast softens the interference, so the motion looks more natural. You're not seeing the ruler itself.
You're seeing the fight between light, camera, patterns, and brain-a happy accident from the worlds of physics and visual perception.
