DEOn October 18, 2024, a frantic 911 call was placed from the Cherohala Skyway in Tellico Plains, Tennessee. The caller identified himself as Brandon Andrade and claimed he was being chased by a bear before falling off a steep cliff. When search teams arrived at the remote location, they discovered a body carrying Andrade’s identification, leading them to believe the “bear attack” had been fatal.
The mystery took a dark turn when investigators realized the body was not Brandon Andrade. The victim was actually 34-year-old Steven Douglas Lloyd, a man with a mental health disorder who had been lured into the woods. The man who made the fake 911 call was actually 45-year-old Nicholas Wayne Hamlett, a fugitive who had befriended Lloyd just to kill him and steal his identity to escape his own criminal past.
A massive multi-state manhunt for Hamlett began, involving the FBI and local authorities. He was eventually captured on November 10, 2024, after being recognized at a hospital in Columbia, South Carolina. As of January 17, 2026, Hamlett remains in custody facing first-degree murder charges as prosecutors reveal more details about his chilling history of identity theft and staged accidents.
