The History of "Mayday" :
The term "Mayday" originated in the 1920s, coined by Frederick Stanley Mockford, a senior radio officer at Croydon Airport, London. Since many distress calls involved flights between England and France, he wanted a term that was easily understood by both English and French speakers. The word "Mayday" comes from the French phrase "m’aider", meaning "help me."
Before "Mayday," the maritime distress signal SOS was used in Morse code (...---...), but spoken communication required a distinct and unmistakable phrase. Since then, "Mayday" has become the international standard for aviation and maritime distress situations.
When Should "Mayday" Be Used?
Pilots declare "Mayday" only in the most serious emergencies, such as:
⚠️ Engine Failure – If an aircraft loses power and cannot maintain safe flight.
⚠️ Fire on Board – Any fire in the cockpit, cabin, or cargo area requires immediate action.
⚠️ Structural Damage – A major failure in the aircraft’s structure or control surfaces.
⚠️ Pilot Incapacitation – If the pilot is unable to continue flying due to a medical emergency.
⚠️ Fuel Exhaustion – Running critically low on fuel with no immediate landing options.
⚠️ Unlawful Interference – Hijackings or security threats that endanger the aircraft.
If the situation is serious but not life-threatening, pilots use "Pan-Pan" instead of "Mayday" to indicate an urgency that requires attention but does not pose an immediate danger to flight safety.
How to Declare a Mayday Call?
A Mayday call follows a standard format to ensure clarity:
🔹 Say "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday" (repeated three times for urgency).
🔹 Provide the aircraft call sign (e.g., "Boeing 737, ABC123").
🔹 State the nature of the emergency (e.g., "Engine failure, descending to 5,000 feet").

Hier konnten wir unsere eigenen Grenzen kennenlernen - mit und ohne Atemschutzgerät.
Hier konnten wir Beweglichkeit, Orientierung, Kommunikation und Teamarbeit unter maximaler Belastung testen.
Denn unter Stress funktioniert nur das, was wir geübt haben.
Mayday-Training ist kein „Worst Case“-Denken – es ist Verantwortung.
Damit wir im Ernstfall nicht nur retten können.
Sondern auch selbst sicher zurückkommen.
