THYour church staff is not a family.
Your church staff can share a common belief. A mission. Have a sense of calling, sure.
But it’s not a family.
It’s a team.
Because you know what families don’t do?
They don’t base your role within it upon your performance.
They don’t restructure or eliminate your role, then post on social media about how they’re “believing God for your next season.”
They don’t tell you you’re family—and then ghost you the moment you leave.
The “we’re like a family here” line?
It’s pretty common that it really means:
Tolerate dysfunction because “we love each other.”
Accept zero boundaries because “family sacrifices.”
Do what I say because, “I know best.”
You didn’t sign up to be treated like a sibling, parent, or part of a family.
You signed up to do a job, alongside other adults, with clear roles and healthy boundaries inside of a ministry team.
The body of Christ? Absolutely a family.
But the way most church leaders organize staff and volunteers to make ministry happen? That’s a team.
When you call a church staff a family but operate it like a team, people get confused.
And when they don’t perform—or when there’s misalignment—and they get let go?
They don’t just feel fired.
They feel abandoned.
Not just professionally. Spiritually.
If the role is a job and people are treated like employees, just make it clear, and don’t call it a family.
Plus, not everyone even has the same definition of “family.”
Some people hear “family” and think: safe, loyal, unconditional.
Others hear “family” and think: controlling, codependent, toxic.
So when a church uses family language but has team expectations, you’re setting things up for misunderstanding.
If your model requires performance and the flexibility to make changes when someone isn’t the right fit—that’s a team.
Teams can be healthy. Teams can be honoring. Teams can be empowering.
