After today’s doctor’s appointment, my father left me in the warm indoors while he fetched the car. We parked my transport chair in the waiting room nearest the entrance, & I quietly waited as my father dashed through the cold parking lot ❄️🚙

My dad was gone less than 10 minutes, but by the time he came to roll me away, I had two people around my chair, asking about my underlying conditions; how it affects my everyday life, can I eat? Does it hurt to walk?

At the time, I smiled widely (behind two masks) & answered each questions as it was asked.

More often than not, answering questions from strangers about my medical history can feel intrusive & exhausting. In this instance, I was speaking to a nurse at my local hospital (they were not affiliated with my case or care team, but they had been passing by & stopped upon overhearing someone asking me questions about the chair)👂🏩

I’m always willing to discuss my conditions with anyone who is engaged in healthcare or caring for members of the disability community, as my conditions - primarily Superior Mesenteric Artery Syndrome (SMAS) & Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) 🦓 - are considered “rare disorders” (although this epidemiological data is under debate). Interpersonal connection & conversation are one of the many ways in which awareness is spread, so I’ll often push through my timidness to talk with strangers 👥

If you see someone in a wheelchair, & you “catch” them moving their legs (maybe even standing!) 👀, this occurrence need not incite further questions ☺️🕊
