Most parents have a “wait and see” approach when it comes to milestones. But what you may not realize is that every movement your baby makes from day 1 impacts how easily (or not) your baby will achieve milestones. 💪Babies first need to integrate their primitive reflexes, which are automatic motor movements that they are born with. These reflexes integrate through MOVEMENT! 😯If they don’t integrate properly, your baby may struggle to reach milestones that require more complex motor patterns like rolling or crawling. Comment “guide” and I’ll send you the link to my “Primitive Reflex Guide” to help you boost your baby’s success in the first six months. #babydevelopment #occupationaltherapy #earlydevelopment #milestones

Many parents hear: “Let’s just wait.” Sometimes that’s reasonable. But sometimes small movement differences widen with time. What I watch for isn’t just when a baby reaches a milestone — but how they move while getting there. Things like: 💛 Tiny delays can widen with time Small differences in strength, balance, or coordination can become more noticeable as new skills build on earlier ones. 🧠 Notice the quality of movement A baby may reach a milestone, but how they get there matters — posture, symmetry, and control all tell us a lot. 🌿 Celebrate small shifts as progress Improvement often happens gradually — a stronger push through the arms, better balance in sitting, smoother transitions. 🎯 Everyday play becomes therapy Rolling, reaching, floor time, and exploration naturally build strength, coordination, and confidence. 💬 Trust your intuition Parents are often the first to notice when something feels slightly different about their child’s movement. 🧩 Observe posture and balance Things like leaning, stiffness, or difficulty maintaining positions can give early clues about strength and stability. 🌈 Early support builds confidence When movement becomes easier, babies explore more — and exploration drives learning. ✨ Early support isn’t labeling a child. It’s simply giving the nervous system better practice while it’s still wiring itself. Save this if you’ve ever wondered whether to ask for help. 💾 Hi, I’m Dr. Tara Liddle, pediatric physical therapist and founder of Motor Skills Matter. I offer in-home and virtual well-baby movement sessions for parents who want to support their baby’s motor development early. More and more, I’m seeing full-term infants struggling with movement, posture, and coordination that could often be improved with simple changes in positioning, play, and daily routines. A little guidance early can make a big difference in how confidently babies move and explore their world.

Movement doesn’t start with sports. It starts on the floor. Here’s what’s really happening 👇 🔹 Babies learn to push into the ground 🔹 Force creates movement 🔹 Movement creates transitions 🔹 Transitions build coordination When this system is working well: ✨ Movement looks smooth ✨ Transitions happen naturally ✨ Babies explore with variety When it’s not: ⚠️ Babies get “stuck” ⚠️ Movement looks stiff or forced ⚠️ We see asymmetry and compensation 👉 This isn’t just about milestones. It’s about how movement is built from the very beginning. Save this if you want to better understand how your baby learns to move 💛 😍Follow for more on building strong movement foundations from day one

Supporting your baby’s motor development doesn’t have to mean guessing your way through it. Those early months are full of questions: tummy time, rolling, what to work on next, and whether what you’re doing is actually helping. As a pediatric physical therapist and mom of three, I created my milestone classes to give parents exactly what I wish more families had: a clear plan for supporting development at home, without the overwhelm. And because this week marks 6 years of Milestones & Motherhood, I’m celebrating with a little anniversary gift for this community. All milestone classes and bundles are 10% off, and when you enroll you’ll also receive the digital Milestone Playbook FREE. ✨ Comment MILESTONES and I’ll send you the details. Tummy time doesn’t have to feel stressful. Milestones don’t have to feel confusing. And you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. 🤍 You’ve got this, and I’ve got you.

Back at it with our 4-6 month development milestones! This is where I found things really started to get fun ☺️✨More movement, more personality… and sometimes a little more unpredictability too. Remember — milestones are a guide, not a race. They are important but every baby develops at their own pace, and there’s a wide range of normal. Timing is important but I also look at what order bubs reach them and also that they aren’t regressing (ie used to be able to roll and now can’t) If something doesn’t feel quite right, trust your gut — early support can make a big difference! 👉🏻Save this one for later or or you’d like your baby’s development checked or have questions, you’re always welcome to reach out or book via the link in bio. 📌 as always this content is for general information only and is not a substitute for professional health advice. Understanding baby movement milestones can help parents feel more confident during the first year. Most babies develop movement skills in a general progression: rolling → sitting → crawling → standing → walking. These milestones help babies build strength, coordination, and balance as their nervous system matures. But here’s something many parents don’t realize: babies don’t always follow the exact same timeline, and some may skip certain stages like crawling. Development is a process — not a race. Save this for later if you're expecting or navigating the first year with your baby 🤍 **DISCLAIMER-all information provided is for educational purposed only. This is not meant as medical advice. One of the most common questions parents ask is “When should my baby be rolling, crawling, or walking?” The truth is that developmental milestones happen within a range, not on an exact date. Every baby’s nervous system, strength, experiences, and opportunities to move are different. So no two babies reach milestones at the exact same time. Some babies roll earlier and take longer to crawl. Some crawl quickly and take their time walking. These ranges exist because development is a process, not a checklist. What matters most isn’t the exact day a milestone happens, it’s that babies are continuing to gain strength, explore movement, and progress over time. If you ever have concerns, early guidance can help support development and give you simple ways to encourage movement through play. ✨ Follow along for more tips on supporting your baby’s development through everyday play. #pediatricphysicaltherapy #motordevelopment #physicaltherapy #baby

That incredible movement you’re seeing in this newborn? It’s not “advanced.” It’s biological design. Babies are born with primitive reflexes — automatic movement patterns that exist for survival. But here’s the part most parents don’t realize: 🧠 Reflexes are meant to mature into conscious movement. And when we give babies the right opportunities early — like tummy time with gentle elevation — those reflexes: • strengthen neural pathways • organize the nervous system • lay the foundation for rolling, crawling, sitting, and beyond • literally build the brain through movement This is why early tummy time matters so much. Not forced. But active, reflex-driven movement where the baby is doing the work. The earlier the brain gets this kind of input: ✔️ the easier movement becomes ✔️ the smoother milestones unfold ✔️ the stronger the brain–body connection develops Reflexive movement ➡️ intentional movement ➡️ lifelong coordination. ✨ Start early. ✨ Trust the reflexes. ✨ Let the brain grow by use. If you want developmentally aligned ways to support this from day one — without overthinking it — this is exactly what I teach inside my brain-building movement programs. Because the brain doesn’t wait for age. It grows when it’s given the opportunity to move. Want more ways to stimulate your newborn baby? Comment PROGRAM and I’ll send you the link to my brain building programs!
