Here’s a step-by-step process for leveling your mix: 1. Mute EVERYTHING, put a level meter on the stereo bus, and bring in your kick having it peak just around 0db. After this, bring in your snare and have that peaking similarly to the kick. If they’re both playing together, try not to have them peaking higher than -8 collectively. Kick and snare are the pillars of your song. Everything else exists just underneath them, never above. 2. Bring in your vocal and have it peaking just below the kick and snare. The best way to look at this is like a bridge - the kick and snare are the pillars, the vocal is the road that exists just underneath it. It should be the loudest, most consistent thing in the mix, but never louder than the actual transients of the kick and snare. 3. Bring in your bass. This step is interchangeable with bringing in the vocal, but the way to look at bass is to bring it in just below the kick. A very common mix mistake is having the bass swallow the kick. Oftentime it’s hard to hear accurately, so make sure your kick, snare, vocal, and bass altogether are peaking closer to -7. If you bring your bass in and all of a sudden your mix is peaking at -3, it’s too loud fam. 4. Bring in the rest of the drums. Hi hats. Shakers. Reverse cymabs, etc. Nothing should ever be louder than the snare. Then bring in the rest of your instruments IN THE ORDER OF IMPORTANCE. This way, nothing will ever overshadow your main guitar or piano melody or part. Coming back to the bridge analogy, the kick and snare are the pillars, the vocal is the road, and the instruments are the water underneath everything. 5. Bring in your cowbell and make sure it is the LOUDEST thing in the mix. Your cowbell is the foundation of every single one of your songs. Without cowbell there is no song. They don’t call you Phonky Freddy for nothing. Show them what you and your cowbell are made of and you will NEVER be disrespected again So before you even START mixing your song, use this step by step guide to level it out. Here’s a list 👇 Which one are you going to do next? 1. Build a visual moodboard for your next era. Think brand. Think energy. 2. Write down 3 lessons you’ve learned from your worst release flop. 3. Make a “someday” tour list—100 cities you dream of performing in. 4. Design your “worst case” plan. What if the next drop flops? What’s your bounce-back move? 5. Study one artist’s rollout from the last year. Break down what worked. 6. Voice note your younger self explaining why you still make music. 7. Call your first music teacher or mentor and thank them. 8. Map out your dream release week hour-by-hour, like it’s already happening. 9. Write your artist manifesto—what do you stand for, and why should anyone care? 10. Plan a solo creative retreat. No content. No pressure. Just create. 11. Write your own music obituary. What do you want to be remembered for? 12. Think about a lyric that still wrecks you. Ask yourself why. 13. Make a “done” list. Everything you’ve achieved in music so far. No matter how small. 14. Write down your 5 non-negotiables. These guide your career decisions. 15. Send your future self a “don’t quit” letter. 16. Write a Grammy speech. Yes, seriously. Then reverse-engineer the path. 17. Ask your 80-year-old self what to focus on right now. 18. Write a letter to the version of you who almost quit. Thank them for holding on. 19. Start a quote bank—industry gems, lyrics, or advice that keep you going. 20. Keep a daily “tiny wins” log. Every DM, stream bump, or kind comment. 21. List 50 reasons you love music. That’s your joy inventory. Don’t lose it. #growwithsoph #musicindustrytips #upcomingartists #musicmaker

Your Artist Shadow — What It Really Means 1. Scared to promote your music You were taught promotion means selling out. Truth: You don’t hate promo — you hate pretending. Work: Speak about your music like an invite, not a request. 2. Avoid showing your face This is a visibility wound — fear of being judged. Truth: You’re not afraid of being seen. You’re afraid of losing control. 3. Can’t stay consistent Part of you fears what success will demand. Truth: Growth changes identity — and that feels uncomfortable. 4. You overthink and never post Perfection is your armor. Truth: You try to earn safety by being flawless. Work: Show the journey, not just the result. 5. You consume more than you create You’re waiting for permission. Truth: You haven’t fully trusted your voice yet. Work: Create first. Learn later. 6. You keep changing your sound or strategy Fear of choosing wrong. Fear of commitment. Truth: You want certainty before devotion. Work: Choose once — grow through repetition. 7. You post value but hide personality You believe love must be earned. Truth: You learned to perform for approval. Work: Let people know you, not just your art. 8. You obsess over streams and numbers You gave your worth to the algorithm. Truth: You want to feel chosen. Work: Root yourself in purpose, not validation. #growwithsoph #musicindustrytips #upcomingartists #musicmaker

I took a break from mixing one of my songs for an entire 6 MONTHS because it was frustrating me so bad. When I came back to it, I mixed it down in one sitting and it was the GREATEST mix I’ve ever done. Here are some of the specific areas that SUFFER when you choose not to take breaks when you’re mixing 1. Your Low End. When it comes to mixing bass, you lose perspective faster than anything else. You work on a sub for 30 minutes, and now when it’s back in the mix you decide it’s not loud enough. So you crank it until the mix is ruined by too much bass and you scare away all the birds on nearby trees when you take it out for a car test 2. Your midrange. You’ve gone on a solo-sweep EQ butchering rampage. It all started with cutting the mud out of the vocal. Now you’ve cut so much midrange out of your mix that is sounds like an iphone speaker plugged into a subwoofer with no in between. Stop and get a coffee before you start doing too much. 3. Your high end. It’s easy to get carried away with adding “detail” and “clarity” to your mix. When before you know it, you compare it to your reference and it’s so pointy and stabby that the second you switch back to your song is physically hurts to listen to. Take a break, and MAKE SURE to check in with your reference as often as you need to. 4. Your ear holes. Do we really need to talk about ear fatigue and how damaging it can be? Not to mention exhausting to try and keep things in perspective. Give your poor ear holes a second to chill please. 5. Your family. It’s been 18 days. You’re still working on the same mix. Your beard is ugly. Your dog won’t look you in the eye. You smell like ham and cheese hot pockets. And your entire family is now staying with Grandma. Look what you’ve done. My mix after taking a 6 months break became the reference mix for all my songs moving forward. Never underestimate the power of breaks. And if this resonated with you and you’re ready to get your music sounding as great as your favorite songs, click the link in my bio or comment “mixing” 👇

Comment “money” and I’ll send you the complete breakdown of all income streams. These are 7 of 50+ ways to make money as a music artist in 2026. Most artists only know streaming. but here’s the reality: knowing all 50+ streams doesn’t matter if you don’t have a system to execute them. That’s where strategy comes in. #musicartist #musicmaker #musicmentor #producerlifestyle
