Here’s our rendition of the “Song of Storms” from The Legend of Zelda! Jon and I bonded over a shared love of video games, and how they contain some of the most beautiful music ever written.
This was the first and only take with no rehearsal. I asked him if he knew the tune and then we jumped right in! The arrangement genuinely came out of nowhere! Music is magic!

BLMini I sing you sing day 22! Today is a bit different…
Sooooooo many singers I know are legit AFRAID of anything related to jazz. It’s not cause they’re stupid, it’s not cause they’re bad musicians, and it’s certainly not because they’re incapable. They freeze up when asked to improvise and over analyse what is being asked of them in the changes.
Of all my years teaching, performing, & studying, my BIGGEST pet peeve is instrumentalists who are huge snobs about overly academic jazz. (and I went to berklee so trust me I’ve met quite a few 😂). I’m an instrumentalist, and honesty NOT predominantly a jazz player, but I’ve always been disheartened by the actual shaming and discouragement of anyone simply “trying” to touch what they see as this sacred forbidden art form, reserved for an elite few.
So for today - any of my (now thousands!) of singers who are loving singing along, and the thousands more who are BRAND NEW to singing (welcome!!!!), absolutely claim this as your day to take your first ever solo. Yes you’re copying me, and it’s really more of a duet, but who cares? You’re doing it and that’s awesome. We can work up to you feeling independent and doing it on your own, if that’s where you want to go
I’ll die on the hill that jazz is about listening, and today you’re doing just that!
