What are the benefits of trees on farms? It’s #NationalTreeWeek and as far as we’re concerned, that’s a very important week! 🌳 Tree expert, Ian from the @thetreecouncil came to help us plant an oak tree in one our fields that’s permanent pasture for @riverforddairy cows. Thanks to funding from Plymouth Community Forest we’re about to start planting an exciting new project here - that echoes the grazing pastures of the past, before grazing land was open and cleared in the way we’re used to seeing it these days. There are so many benefits of trees for cows, especially dairy cows, which are very sensitive to heat. As well as providing shelter from wind and rain, and good scratching posts, cows will self-medicate as they forage, and as Harriet from our sustainability team explains, there’s evidence that cows are happier in fields with trees in, giving them a bit of cover. Agroforestry has many benefits in a farm setting - trees provide habitat and perches for many of the creatures we want to encourage in an organic system, they mean connectivity for wildlife - including bats, who use them to echolocate their bearings. Who wants to see more tree content? 🌳

We had a fab evening at @passporttochristmas at the @irishnationalstudandgardens last weekend. This is the newest Santa experience to Kildare and Kai absolutely loved it! From the gingerbread man, to the really attentive elves, the nicest Santa and the funfair to the gorgeous lights all around this is a lovely evening out! It’s National Tree Week 🌳 Trees are vital. As the biggest plants on the planet, they give us oxygen, store carbon, stabilise the soil and give life to the world’s wildlife. It’s been scientifically proven that spending time in forests, surrounded by trees causes a decrease in stress and anxiety. Japan have dedicated Annual Leave to spend time forest bathing, a practice called shinrin-yoku. Trees provide homes to the wildlife we love, and help improve biodiversity. It’s vital we protect our older, more established trees as they are the lifeblood to precious ecosystems. Trees are resilient, but they are not invincible. We are testing trees more and more- they need our help! We need to plant more native Irish trees! If you cannot plant your own tree you can sponsor one, and even visit it 🌳 If you cannot plant or donate, go out for a walk and appreciate how wonderful nature is, and just how beautiful trees are. It’s the perfect time, as all the trees are now budding! A huge thank you to @cormacoconnor who took my passion for trees and created this masterpiece!
