TONING IS NOT A THING. Yup I said it. The fitness industry has lied to so many women on what (a) their body should look like and (b) how to get there. If you’re looking for “tone”, you’re most likely hoping to tighten the muscles to give them a lean “shape.” People think low weight, high rep exercises like barre will do that. When in reality, what you’re really looking for comes down to two things: ▪️Fat loss ▪️Increase in muscular size That’s it. Exercises like barre do not tone your body. Nothing does. You are not going to change the SHAPE of your muscles with exercise. You change its SIZE. Yes, that means your the goal is bigger muscles, not “longer” ones like you’ve been told. Increased muscle size + less fat is what you’re looking for when you want to “tone”. The days of being scared of muscle are over. Fat loss comes from a calorie deficit. And exercise alone will not create a big enough calorie deficit. You must put some love and attention into your nutrition as well. Exercise helps (as does being active throughout the day) but nutrition is the key. And any exercise (barre or not) that is going to change your muscle size requires resistance and progressive overload. This doesn’t mean you need to ditch barre and head to the gym, but it does mean you have to be serious about maximizing your effort, and continuously challenging yourself throughout your barre journey. I recognize this may be the opposite of what the barre and Pilates community is telling you but I’d rather side with science 🤷🏽‍♀️ I am not here to tone, sculpt or shape your body. That language isn’t found on my business card or in my classes. I am here to make you healthier, stronger, and happier. Period.

I once read, “Fear those who never doubt themselves.” This resonates with me, especially when I look at the Pilates community today. It’s easy to spot those who don’t question their expertise; they create teacher training courses without fully mastering the basics. Some modify exercises just to seek external validation, while others blindly accept the idea that “any movement is good.” Then there are those so self-absorbed that they fail to realize they’re undermining the very foundation they stand on. Doubting is actually a valuable habit—a habit that anyone can develop. And with Pilates, everyone can learn to harness that doubt for their benefit.
