ELPostojna Cave Slovenia 📍
On our way from Ljubljana to the coast we visited Postojna Cave (and Predjama Castle which I’ll share later) the largest tourist cave in Europe; welcoming visitors for over 200 years and the first cave to have a railway in 1872.
✨ Postojna is a vast cave system 24km long & up to 115 metres underground with Stalagmites (grow up) and stalactites (grow down) formed over thousands of years. The oldest dated stalagmite that you can see on the tour (half a million year old ones are hidden elsewhere in the cave) is called skyscraper so big at 16 metres high & so wide it looks more like a wall than a dripstone estimated 150,000 years old. And ‘brilliant’ a five metre tall bright white stalagmite.
✨ You also have the chance to see an Olm known as a baby dragon these entirely aquatic creatures live in caves in complete darkness they are void of skin pigment and can live up on 10 years without food. You cannot take pictures of them but they are amazing to see.
✨ Located in the southwestern Slovenia 45 mins from Ljubljana you can travel easily on public transport or car. Parking is the second entrance (the hotel is the first) costing €3 an hour
✨ Tickets costs €101.80 for a family of four we booked on the first tour of the day 9am. You have to arrive 15 mins before your booked tour to board the train
✨ The tour takes 90 minutes walking about 5km through the caves. The whole experience we were there about 3 hours. There’s also lots of shops food and facilities on site.
✨ At the end of the tour there is a gift shop and the world’s only cave post office where you can write a postcard with a cave postmark. Be aware though there isn’t much time before they’re calling you for the train departing out again.
✨ Tips - It’s a constant 10 degrees in the cave so take warm layers. It is steep, sometimes slippery and dimly lit so footwear with grips is helpful. It can be hard to keep up with the tour & hear them so would recommend getting an audio guide. It’s really busy but look around and really take it in, it’s incredible.

RTPostojnčane že nekaj časa razburjajo vozniki, ki divjajo skozi središče mesta. Na Tržaški cesti, na kateri je hitrost omejena na 10 kilometrov na uro, so ujeli voznika, ki je vozil 124 kilometrov na uro. Kljub ekstremnim hitrostim na cesti, kjer sta tudi dve šoli, še vedno ni radarja. Da bi bil nujen, se strinjajo vsi, a ni jasno, kdo bi moral poskrbeti za njegovo postavitev.

- There’s parking on spot (paid)
- You’ll take a little train to go down to the cave
- You can see the Olms!!! (the oldest animal in Slovenia)
- Great option of activity for rainy days
- It’s the largest cave in Slovenia - and it’s really impressive!
- Only a portion of it is open to the public and the tour is very informative
About Skocjan Cave:
- Parking on site is free
- You’ll be walking the entire time, so wear good shoes
- The cave itself is smaller
- After visiting the cave, you can do a trail back to the parking and see some other waterfalls and caves
- Best visited on a day with good weather because of the trail afterwards
- There’s a massive river flowing through the cave
- Pictures or videos aren’t allowed inside the cave
- The tour is also very interesting and 100% worth it
- Tickets are a bit cheaper than Postojna
