BEToday California voters head to the polls to vote on Prop 50. This bill requires *temporary* use of new congressional district maps through 2030 and directs the independent Citizens Redistricting Commission to resume enacting congressional district maps in 2031.
Supporters say it approves *temporary, emergency* congressional district maps to counter Donald Trump’s scheme to rig next year’s congressional election. Meanwhile opponents say it’s written by politicians, for politicians to dismantle safeguards that keep elections fair. Both sides have spent almost $150 million advertising their side of the bill.
So on Friday, while filming a video at San Francisco City Hall, I saw several white liberals (including the two at the end of the video, one of which is @stefani4ca) leading at least 50 Chinese immigrants chanting “yes on 50” to the ballot box. And while I don’t take issue with immigrants or non-English speakers voting, I can’t help but wonder if these people understand the full extent of what they’re promoting. Not a single person could answer my questions and they kept directing me to the white people leading the group. It reminded me of Malcom X’s quote about white liberals being “more dangerous because they deceive the people.”
But this lesson doesn’t just apply to California, it’s everywhere. If you support a policy, would you support it if your opponent proposed it? If the answer is “no” then you should rethink your support. Stop voting for people, policies and legislation simply because your preferred party tells you to and start thinking what would happen if your opponents held that same power.
