Reactivity can feel isolating as hell, but you’re not alone – and you’re not failing. Working through reactivity is HARD. And it asks a lot from both ends of the lead. But you’re still showing up – even through the bad days, the tears, the judgemental looks – that counts so much more than you realise. Today, I can proudly say that walking past other dogs without a blow up is our new normal. Reactions are few and far between (though we still sometimes have our moments). When you feel that dread before you walk out the door with your reactive dog… remember that the walk doesn’t have to be perfect. Success might be getting to the letterbox without tension, or walking past that trigger an inch closer than you did last week. None of those moments feel huge at the time. But string them together. and suddenly you look back and realise you’re standing somewhere you weren’t sure you’d ever reach. So if you’re seeing this and in the midst of your reactivity training journey – keep your head up, and keep showing up for your dog. It takes a whole lot of time, patience, courage, and mutual learning – but it IS possible. Don’t give up ❤️ Thank you @will_and_mill for inspiring this video! #dogtraining #reactivity #reactivedog #reactivedogtraining #dogsofinstagram

I hear this a lot: “If your dog is reactive, he doesn’t belong at the beach.” And honestly — I don’t agree. My dog is on a leash when I’m not 100% sure about him, especially around smaller dogs or when his energy is off. He still has moments where he doesn’t behave perfectly. And that’s exactly why I take my responsibility seriously. I’m training, I create space, I use a leash, I’m doing my part. FREEDOM IS EARNED in my opinion! And I think that’s the point: taking responsibility for your dog. I am so sad we still have to deal with situations like those in the video. People who simply don’t care about the behaviour of their dogs. Not expecting everything to be perfect, but making sure you’re not putting others in an unsafe and dangerous situation, especially not repeatedly. That’s the bare minimum. #responsibledogowner #reactivedog dogtraining

Stop walking your reactive dog around the block! 🛑 Seriously. For a reactive dog, a standard neighborhood walk is often an stress-filled gauntlet of triggers. People walking around, the random cat, loud cars, kids riding bikes, barking dogs behind fences- a constant flurry of new things coming past keeping your dog in a state of heightened arousal- THEN you see your dogs trigger on top of this? 💥🤯 These walks can actually increase their anxiety and reactivity over time, not decrease it. We need to shift our focus from just “exercise” to fulfillment and decompression. Your dog needs more than just a walk. They need proper play, mental stimulation, fulfillment, long line freedom, and safe off-leash time. Using quiet parks is key as you have enough room to move around triggers and avoid reactions until your training skill set is ready to tackle triggers head on AND This will help decrease your dog’s reactivity while you do it. Here’s why these alternatives are game-changers: ♠️Proper Play: Structured play (like a flirt pole, fetch in a secure area, or structured tug) burns energy and builds a stronger bond, which is crucial for a reactive dog’s outlets, builds confidence and focus on you. 🧩Mental Stimulation: Sniffing games, learning new tricks, confidence building and short, fun training sessions while at the park tire the brain far more effectively then just a walk. 🪢Long Line Time: Find a quiet field, park, or trail and let them explore on a 5-10m long line. This gives them the freedom to sniff and move without the pressure of close encounters, which is incredibly decompressing and way more fulfilling than a neighbourhood walk. 🐩Safe Off-Leash Time: If you have access to a securely fenced area or a private sniff spot, or have a reliable off leash dog, this is GOLD. True freedom to run, play, and just be a dog without the constant tension of a leash is vital for their mental well-being. THIS is so so important. Dogs NEED TO RUN. Stop the short leash neighbourhood walks, pop your dog in the car & give these things a go instead & see how you go! #reactivedog #dogreactivity #dogtraining #trainingtips #dogtrainerlife

Dog “reactivity” isn’t just bad behavior — it’s often a nervous system that’s stuck in overdrive. When a dog doesn’t have clear structure, boundaries, or meaningful outlets for their instinctual energy, they live just below threshold… constantly. It doesn’t take much for them to tip over into barking and lunging. That’s not defiance — that’s overwhelm. The fix isn’t just correcting the explosion. It’s changing the baseline. When we intentionally build in moments of regulation, give them purposeful ways to use their energy, and create clarity in their daily life, we help bring their nervous system out of survival mode. Over time, that’s where real emotional stability comes from. #dogtrainer #reactivedog #aussieshepherd #regulation #nervoussystem

i have always hated the label “reactive dog” because it assigns a label to a dog based solely off the moments they’re stressed out, when there’s so much more to them. thanks to positive reinforcement & a proper behavior modification plan, harvey’s reactions are very few and far between these days. he still doesn’t like strangers touching him, he never will (neither will i, so who am i to judge) but let this video serve as your reminder to not judge a reactive dog parent based off the 5 second passing on the street. there’s so much more to a reactive dog than their reactivity. just like there’s so much more to anxious people than their anxiety. #reactivedog #reactivity #reactivedogtraining #dogtrainer

Sadly there are so many things we got wrong when we first rescued Custard. It breaks my heart to know that we quite possibly did contribute to his reactivity. These are things we massively regret and believe made things worse… 1. Walking Custard way too soon after rescuing him. I wish that we had waited at least 2 weeks. 2. Switching from a harness to a gentle leader - this just caused discomfort and way more frustration. 3. Not allowing Custard to sniff enough. We got so caught up in trying to walk him with a loose lead 24/7. This was just not possible, especially with a rescue who had no idea what walking on a lead even was 😅 4. Pushing him too far too quickly. We allowed him to go over threshold way too much. However, keeping him under threshold was difficult as when we first rescued him we lived in a city and opposite a dog park. (It was so hard to get away from other dogs)! Having a reactive rescue dog is a journey and we all make mistakes along the way. My biggest regret is that I wish we had ignored so much of the training advice we read during the early days. SO much training advice online is extremely damaging to dogs physically and emotionally 🤍😔 #reactivedog #dogreactivity #dogtraining #rescuedog #goldenretriever

If your dog struggles to settle, try THIS👇 Many try to teach calm like it’s “obedience” (eg sit, stay, place..) but calm isn’t a cue.. It’s a nervous system skill that needs to be learned & practiced This is why impulse games with “rules” (eg tug with pauses) can really help (bonus, they really tire my dogs out so it’s a win win - great for rainy days) In this game, Aura gets excited, then practices stopping, breathing, and resetting before re-engaging - withOUT me giving her explicit directions She learned by trial. The pause isn’t removing fun. It’s teaching how to come back down, aka, settle This game moves her body, engages her instincts, works her mind - it’s a favorite!! Obedience is about what a dog does Calm/settle is about how their body recovers Play 👉 pause 👉 recover 👉 play is how many dogs learn to regulate excitement and *actually *settle in real life This isn’t about suppressing energy. It’s about teaching, and PRACTICING, the skills that make calm possible Let me know if you want a step by step on how I taught this! What can I say? He likes his routine! 🤷‍♀️ Truly, one of the very few things I got right with Turbo was making his crate his happy place. Heck, half the time I offer to let him sleep in bed with me he wakes me up after an hour pawing at the door to go back to his crate! 😂 for a nervous, sensitive dude having a little predictable, cozy, always-the-same space has been huge. Vet visits, boarding, travel, new places… it’s one thing that always feels the same. It’s predictable, not punishment. And also a non-negotiable at bedtime. 😂 #reactivedog #reactivedogtraining #dogtraining #weimmoments #weimsofinstagram

Being sensitive. Feeling everything deeply. Overthinking situations. Struggling to set boundaries in the moment — sometimes staying silent when you should react, and other times reacting more than you intended to. If you’re someone like this, you probably know what it feels like to be labeled “too sensitive” or “difficult.” Hearing that enough growing up can make you feel alienated and insecure. So many of us learn to suppress parts of ourselves — swallow the hurt, stay quiet, be easier to be around… just to be liked. And the painful irony? You lose people anyway. And also end up hating yourself. If you’ve ever wondered why your emotions feel bigger than everyone else’s or whether you’re difficult to love — you’re not alone. And maybe, if you’re someone like this, you also ended up with a dog who has big emotions. A reactive dog. A sensitive dog. A dog the world might label “difficult.” But living with a dog like this teaches you something quietly over time. To pause. To be patient. To not judge big emotions. To focus on their positives. When they struggle, the question shifts from “Why do I have a difficult dog?” to “He’s struggling right now… how can I help him regulate?” And somewhere along the way, you realize: The compassion you learned to give your dog… is the compassion you needed for yourself. Maybe that’s the lesson reactive dogs bring into our lives. You love your dog while they’re still learning and growing. And they love you 🥹 The right people will love you the same way. ❤️ Being more sensitive than others doesn’t make you difficult… or unlovable. #reactivedog #bigemotions #sensitiveperson #dogreactivity reactivedogsunite

like actually so silly to be angry with… an innocent little puppy. 😭 next time you feel like being mad at your dog just laugh at yourself instead for the fact that you’re yelling at a DOGGG who is just like “wut” and whatever behavior our dogs are doing that is upsetting us can be changed, but yelling is not the way to effectively change it. taking our emotions out on our dogs is NOT the way. you can be frustrated or tired, but not *at* your dog pls and thank you 🩷 #dogreels #dogtraining #reactivedog #dogmom
