MOI had no idea as a first time mom.
That overheating was so serious, and that feeling their little hands was not an effective way to determine whether they are actually feeling hot during sleep.
Safely dressing baby for sleep is usually a point of stress for parents in general - so to relieve some of that for you, I’ve included 4 easy steps to consider when dressing baby for bed as well as HOW to do a temp check-in on them. This isn’t to cause fear, but to inform. 💕
*You should always take [your] specific environment into account: some questions you can ask yourself include - how’s the airflow in the room? Is there AC? If not, you may consider less layers. Are YOU comfortable in the room yourself?
As a general rule of thumb when it comes to safe sleep, it’s better to have baby slightly underdressed than overdressed, as the danger of overheating has been linked to a greater risk of SIDS.
When thinking about keeping baby comfortably cool in the warmer temps, consider these points:
1️⃣. light cotton / breathable fabrics
2️⃣. lightweight swaddle or sleep sack (consider moving down a TOG or switching to a thinner material for summertime)
3️⃣. keep thermostat around 20C or 68F - I say *around* because it can be difficult to maintain an exactly “perfect” temperature at all times of the day/night. As long as it’s floating in and around there in the cooler zone, your baby’s resting peacefully and comfortably, that is perfect!
4️⃣. Always wise to do a *temperature check-in if you’re unsure! HOW: Use your fingers and lightly touch the back of baby’s neck (their chest/tummy can be another helpful indicator of core temp!). It should feel only slightly warm and completely dry, not hot or clammy whatsoever. The hands and feet will usually feel cooler than the rest of the body, so it’s not a reliable guide for temperature check-ins. If baby feels hot/clammy, or looks to be uncomfortably warm, immediately remove a layer or turn down the temperature and reassess.
