Karen Erickson and David Koppenhaver have created a pretty epic book all about comprehensive literacy. They synthesized all of the research on teaching individuals with significant disabilities to read and write. And their basic premise is that all students, no matter how severe their disabilities, can learn to read and write! Here's a super quick recap of their framework: 1. SHARED READING: Look at and read a book with a student using the RAAP strategy. 2. SHARED WRITING: Scribe messages that students dictate. 3. ALPHABET KNOWLEDGE + PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS: Knowledge of alphabet names, sounds, and graphic shapes. The recognition of different units of sound in spoken language within words, phrases or sentences. 4. INDEPENDENT READING: Give students the opportunity to browse through books, flip through pages, study pictures/letters, etc. 5. INDEPENDENT WRITING: Provide an opportunity for students to apply their emerging understanding of alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, and print concepts. 📖 Want to learn more? Check out their book, Comprehensive Literacy for All, for all of the details! 🤓 #slpeeps #instaslp #schoolslp #speechtherapy #slp2b #ashaigers #slpsfollowslps #slpsofinstagram #slpbloggers #slpnow #slpnowblog

I LOVE supervising, being a mentor, and being a coach. I learn about what is currently being taught in grad schools, the latest research they are focusing on, and it’s a nice challenge to keep me on my game. I wasn’t the best supervisor at first, but I’m learning every year on how to give my students the best experience possible. I’ve had some of the BEST students and they’re KILLIN it as CFs and SLPs! It’s sad to say that I’ve heard of an alarmingly high number of horror stories of CF placements and of supervisors… it breaks my heart that other SLPs would make an extra effort to bring OTHER SLPs DOWN. WE ARE A TEAM. We need to support and guide one another! #slpgradstudent #slpnow #slplife #speechtherapy #speechsounds #speechlanguagepathologist #slpsofinstagram #futureslp #slptobe #slp2be #slp2b #slpa #futureslpa #autism #sped #disability #downssyndrome #schoolslp

Always learning because things are always changing. This year I’ve learned so much, and honestly a lot of it was from social media (posts, articles, SLP summit, etc). What are some accounts you’ve learned from? Some of my favorites have been @play_spark , @thepeachiespeechie , @speechythings (twizzler reel 😂), @terasumpter_slp , @thelisteningslp , @slpnow , @slptoolkit and COUNTLESS others. I love learning from this SLP community. #slp #slpa #slpgradstudent #slp2be #slpmom #slpsofinstagram #speechtherapy #speechpathology #schoolslp #schoolslplife #schoolbasedslp #reels #speechlanguagepathology #slpeeps #speechie #speechtherapistsofinstagram

🤦🏼‍♀️ There are so many misunderstandings about Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID). Let’s clear a few up. ✨BUT FIRST – since it’s just 48 hours from now: 🤍 If you’re an SLP wanting clearer guidance, deeper understanding, and tools you can use immediately with families… ✨ Join @lauraaustinphd and me at #ASHA2025! ✨Session 1070 on Thursday, Nov 20 at 1:00 PM CC/143AB (Level 1) ✨👉🏼This session offers a compassionate roadmap for caregiver support…how to validate emotions, collaborate with mental health partners, and lighten the emotional weight families carry as they navigate PFD and ARFID. 🩷 Hi, I’m Melanie, pediatric feeding specialist and educator who helps professionals and parents worldwide support kids with extreme selective eating and ARFID. And trust me… the myths are everywhere. 👉🏼 “SLPs don’t treat ARFID.” ❌We have to stop overgeneralizing. That’s like saying “Psychologists don’t treat pediatric feeding disorder.” ARFID requires interdisciplinary care, and SLPs play an essential role…understanding sensory foundations, oral motor patterns, AND the very real impact of anxiety. We must know how to support the child’s team, including mental health providers, while guiding the child toward joyful, safe food exploration. 👉🏼 “ARFID is an anxiety disorder.” ❌Nope. It’s an eating or feeding disturbance that is fueled by anxiety, not defined by it. 👉🏼 “Nobody cares, just eat it.” 🤦🏼‍♀️I don’t even have a professional response to this one. We DO care. Deeply. 👉🏼 “Just keep offering… they’ll eat it eventually.” ❌Not true. Kids with ARFID are exceptionally skilled at avoidance, and anxiety thrives on avoidance. Exposure matters—but only when guided by a clinician who knows how to nudge, scaffold, and support a child’s interaction with food in a way that slowly builds confidence and reduces anxiety. If you want more evidence-based ARFID content, feeding strategies, and behind-the-scenes ASHA insights, make sure to follow me @mymunchbug_melaniepotock 💕 #melaniepotock #slpfeeding #arfidawareness #pickyeaters #asha2025

If you’ve felt like something just popped up out of nowhere, you’re not crazy. A lot of people are trying to process this in real time. The move right now isn’t panic or fear. It’s information, coordination, and knowing exactly what we’re responding to. The loss of APD and communication from our scope (check that RUC recommendation packet) isn’t a proposed idea, it’s set to go into effect on January 1, 2027 and it’s a problem for SLPs. Stay steady and be ready for “GO”. Comment RUC for links to the full RUC recommendation packet and a copy of one with relevant SLP pages only. #fixslp #asha #slp #weareslp #onevoice

Once upon a time I didn’t know any of this stuff. I cannot overstate how little I knew about autism before my daughter was diagnosed. It’s almost embarrassing when I think about it now. I thought because she made eye contact and didn’t flap her arms or walk on her tip toes that she couldn’t possibly be autistic. And then one day my best friend, a special education teacher with a master’s degree, pointed out that I should do some research about autism because she had noticed some traits in Abby, who was 3 and a half at the time. My ADHD brain got lost and overwhelmed on Google so fast, so I took to Instagram in desperate search of a digestible infographic, and I found @mrsspeechiep and knew within like 3 minutes that there was no way Abby wasn’t autistic. And then the more I searched around Instagram, the more I realized everything I knew about autism was wrong. And then I started finding autistic people themselves talking about their experiences and explaining their own brains, and it was an incredible window into what was going on in Abby’s mind that she could never have explained to me yet. @neurodivergent_lou and @itsemilykaty were some of the first I remember finding back then. And then I found @evietheexplorer1111 and realized there were other moms of autistic girls on Instagram, and at a time I felt really overwhelmed and alone, it felt like community. And then I stumbled upon a @bohospeechie post about gestalt language processing and it was almost more exciting than the day I realized Abby was autistic, because this explained everything about the unique way Abby communicated and unlocked so much about helping her language develop even further. @theotbutterfly was the first account I found that really explained sensory needs in a way that was helpful and made sense. (@developmentools resources on Etsy were also incredibly helpful for me early on!) All this to say - we all start somewhere. And also, Instagram apparently changed my life. 😂😭
