But seriously, a lot of makers ask us how we achieve such a finish from 3d printing and the answer is simple. (Not easy, but simple!) Prepping the substrate is key. We get most of our sanding done at the raw print stage. Then we use 2 coats of 2k poly primer, apply guide coat, then sand that all the way to 600 grit before applying final priming. Only then is it ready for base coat. Not saying this is the *only* way, but it’s the method that has worked well for us.
Don’t rely on shortcuts - yes, vapor smoothing is cool but without some sanding you’re going to come out looking like warbly melted ice cream. Caking your prints in ten layers of bondo and fillers softens the sharp lines and gives your part a “squishy” look.
