Playing out exactly as we said it would. 2.4 million sheep gone since the ban. Breeding stock sold. Jobs cut. Towns struggling. We warned Labor this would happen. They banned it anyway. Now @rickwilsonmp is bringing the damage to Parliament. This is what happens when you ignore farmers. #KeepTheSheep #KeepingRuralAustraliaAlive Video reposted: @rickwilsonmp

We reported this case last year. It was a heartbreaking situation. We still don’t know exactly what was wrong with this flock - but they were dying. All of them. And as usual, without intervention, they likely would have been left to die. This is the pattern. A so-called sheep farmer, like so many others, ignoring obvious suffering because they can get away with it. Ignoring declining condition. Ignoring deaths. Ignoring what was clearly unfolding in front of them. We can say with certainty that the failure to act sooner - the negligence that allowed prolonged suffering and death - would not have been punished. They would have been “assisted.” Supported to investigate what went wrong. Guided. But not prosecuted. Not fined. Not held meaningfully accountable. And that is the core issue. The same department responsible for promoting the sheep industry - Agriculture Victoria - is also the welfare regulator. The promoter. The protector. And the supposed enforcer. When the regulator and the industry advocate are one and the same, animals are failed - consistently and repeatedly. This isn’t a broken system. Broken suggests it once worked. This system was never designed to function the way the public believes it should. Welfare, as it currently operates, is reactive theatre. It is administered cautiously. It requires repeat offences. It demands proof of deliberate intent. And simply saying, “I didn’t notice.” “I was caught off guard.” “I didn’t realise how bad it was.” Becomes enough. Enough to avoid real consequences. Meanwhile, animals suffer. They collapse in paddocks. They are left to deteriorate. They are left to rot in the dirt. They tremble in pain until predators arrive and rip them apart. There are hundreds of cases like this. Hundreds of people who should have faced consequences. Because the animals who suffered and died deserved more than dismissal. They deserved protection. The sheep industry carries responsibility for systemic cruelty - and until the structure of regulation changes, this cycle will continue. People need to start calling it out.

I’ve been out in the yards, talking to shearers, truckies and processors - and there’s no pulling the wool over anyone’s eyes. Sheep numbers in our Wheatbelt and Great Southern regions are dropping fast. That's why I recently brought the already manifesting impacts of the Government's live export ban to the attention of Parliament. Prices might be up, but that's little consolation. Breeding stock is being sold off, shifts are being cut and regional jobs are on the line. Since 2022, our flock has fallen from 12.2 million to 9.8 million head - and that’s nothing to bleat about. I’ll keep standing up for our sheep industry and the towns that rely on it - because the livelihoods of farming families', local pubs, shops, schools and sporting clubs are at risk because of this Labor Government's bad policy.

We really welcome this decision 🐑 If there’s one thing farmers often have to do, it’s remind neighbouring dog owners to keep their dogs on a lead and away from the flock. We’re pleased there is now legislation that holds dog owners accountable for the serious harm that can happen when sheep are attacked by dogs. We firmly believe this should be called sheep savaging rather than sheep worrying, as the effects of these attacks can be devastating. Please be mindful of your dogs, keep them on a lead near livestock, and we can all stay safe and happy. #southdownduvets #woolbedding #northdevon

Recent times marked a melancholy milestone for O'Connor. I was recently informed that Beaufort River Meats, one of our local processors will be closing its doors. This is a direct effect of the Government's nonsensical policy to ban live exports by sea by May 2028. A bad policy which is already affecting producers and processors - just like Beaufort River Meats. I took the opportunity in Parliament this week to condemn the Albanese and Cook Labor Governments for their lack of understanding of the realities facing people in regional Australia - especially O'Connor, which in more ways than one is ground zero. The $20 million announced by WA Minister Jarvis, is little comfort, and a classic case of too little, too late. #keepthesheep

This is our founder, Gary Hall, delivering a bit of honesty and truth to our followers - and hopefully to some new followers as well. Gary doesn’t take much pleasure in putting himself across social media. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. But sometimes it’s important for people to see who is leading a group. Who started it. And who isn’t going away. Sheep Advocate Australia now has many dedicated individuals involved. They remain private and largely unseen - and that’s intentional. Particularly our investigators. Safety matters. What we do isn’t always welcomed by everyone. Sheep Advocate Australia is now seeking representatives in New South Wales, South Australia, and Western Australia. By the end of this video, we hope we might find those leaders. And begin what we’re calling the Sheep Army. A determined, focused group of individuals who won’t stop until life is better for sheep. People committed to pushing for higher welfare standards. Stronger regulation. And ultimately, reducing the exploitation of sheep altogether. We are incredibly grateful for the support we continue to receive. Recently, our social media posts have gone a little bit crazy. The response has been overwhelming. So many people expressing that sheep need help. That sheep deserve better. It’s been humbling. And it’s part of what encouraged Gary to make this message. So again - Thank you.

🐏 Shearing is crucial for keeping sheep healthy. ❌️ To keep our sheep shorn, for years we’ve relied on shearers from Australia and New Zealand to help out - but travel visas to for this long-standing arrangement were stopped last year. ✅️ When I questioned the Home Office recently, officials said they expected DEFRA to have a plan for shearing in place by now. 🤷‍♀️ DEFRA was questioned yesterday - it seems like there is no plan. 🐑 That means around 1.5million sheep currently going unsheared, including plenty in North Shropshire. 🌍️ International shearers are essential to help manage the UK sheep flock. To avoid an animal welfare crisis, we need a plan, rapidly.

I took the opportunity at question time in Parliament today to highlight livestock worrying and the impact owners can have when they don’t supervise their dogs properly in and around farms. With lambing season already started in many areas across Scotland and about to hit full swing, and the weather turning towards Spring, this is, unfortunately, the peak time for incidents of livestock worrying, which may seem trivial to some but which can kill animals and leave farmers picking up the pieces. My Protection of Livestock Amendment Act from a 2021 strengthened the penalties for livestock worrying to reflect the serious impact it can have, and I was keen to impress upon the Minister the need for action where appropriate to utilise the powers. Most people access the outdoors very responsibly. And when guidance is sensible and reasonable on countryside access with dogs, it is great when that guidance is followed. We have a fantastic history of open land access in Scotland, but with that comes responsibilities, and respecting animals is absolutely fundamental to that.

🐑 Labor’s live sheep shutdown is already biting regional WA. Nearly six months just to name the “successful” applicants and 85% walked away with nothing. Not a cent of State Government support. Plenty of announcements. Not much assistance. Listen to my full reaction here: 👆
