ABCalifornia is facing what experts call a warm snow drought after one of the driest months of March on record in the Sierra.
After a March that felt more like a July, the California Department of Water Resources recorded the second lowest snowpack measurement at Phillip's Station. They measured zero inches of water content and zero inches of depth for zero-percent of average. Link in bio for more.

CBColorado is missing about 8–9 feet of snow heading into peak snowpack.
Right now, the statewide snowpack holds about 5.5 inches of water. A normal peak is around 16–17 inches, which means the state is missing roughly 10–11 inches of water.
In the mountains, a rough rule is 10 inches of snow = 1 inch of water, so making up that deficit would take about 100–110 inches of snow — or roughly 8–9 feet — before peak snowpack in mid-April.
There are only about 2–3 weeks left before the seasonal peak. Snowpack supplies about 80% of Colorado’s water, so what happens over the next few weeks matters for water supply, drought, and wildfire season.

NOColorado’s snowpack tracked near record-lows all winter long. After the spring heat wave, an already bad situation took a turn for the worse and what was left of the snow rapidly melted away. Usually, CO’s snowpack doesn’t peak until early April, but new data is showing that we might have already hit that peak back in March. This is not normal.

This is REALLY bad. Like I genuinely fear my local resort will have to close soon, as they can only blow snow until the new year. After that they’re dipping into the water rights to blow snow for next year, and that’s a risky bet.

CAA few years ago, we decided to dig a snow pit to the ground yesterday in Upper Little Cottonwood Canyon. It was deep! The snow depths were almost 10 feet/3 meters deep! We dig pits like this for avalanche forecasting, snow science, exercise and practice for avalanche rescue scenarios. We filled the pit back in at the end.
In Utah, 95% of our water comes from our snowpack. Despite the copious amounts of snow that Alta receives, Utah is still in a drought. Our upper elevation snowpack is relatively healthy, but the warmer, rainier events have decimated our lower elevation snowpacks. Statewide, our snow water equivalent is around 82% (it’s dropped slightly since I made this video).
Let’s keep conserving water and encouraging our policy makers to do more to conserve, like passing incentives to reduce water use (especially for agriculture). Follow @carolinegleich for more outdoor adventures and policy.

SFThree weeks after Tahoe’s biggest snowstorm in decades, Donner Summit has as much dirt as snow.
Feet of powder quickly disappeared, as rain and unusually warm temperatures depleted gains from the February blizzard that had been cheered at the time as a potential season-saving event.
California’s snowpack is already its lowest since 2015, and record-shattering March heat arriving next week will make it worse.
