A strong foot and ankle create a stronger chain—calves, knees, and hips—which leads to better performance and improved injury resilience. We’re always chasing performance 💨, but we’re also intentional about strengthening the supportive and connective tissues—muscles, ligaments, and tendons—that help make athletes more injury-resistant. Injuries can still happen out of the blue, but the goal is to stack the odds in your favor, especially when it comes to non-contact knee injuries. That’s why acceleration and deceleration drills are some of my favorites. 🔄 They challenge foot stiffness, ankle integrity, force absorption, and re-acceleration—all key components for elite movement and durability. Strengths vs weaknesses and how to approach them is a topic in sports performance I tend to find myself constantly going back and forth on and I finally think I’ve come to a conclusion. I would love to hear @fingermash take on this. Let’s use Usain Bolt as an example. When accelerating, does it make more sense for a guy like him to focus more on extending and taking advantage of his naturally long stride length, OR, does it make more sense for him to focus on turnover since that’s his weakness? My brain immediately chooses the “logical” solution and thinks turnover. But then again, when you watch sprinters like Christian Coleman or Su Bingtian lean into their strengths and simply focus on turnover since they have naturally shorter legs, and dominate as a result of this, it makes me wonder what’s actually the best choice here. At the end of the day, the only real conclusion here is that there is no conclusion. In other words, it depends. I think it requires a ton of testing with countless variables at play. Sometimes, yes, leaning into your strengths is the best idea. But there are also times when I think addressing weaknesses is by far the best move (a force dominant athlete focusing more on reactive strength and elasticity in the weight room). I would love to hear everyone’s take on this as I think it’s a super interesting topic to dive into. Original video @pjvazel
