We see it all the time: these so-called “brutal” therapy sessions go viral. Half the people say they want it, the other half say I should be in prison. But the real question — the only question that actually matters — is never being asked. So we’re having the wrong conversation. When I press on someone’s skin or when I scrape tissue, I’m barely touching them. I’m not pushing hard. And in school, we’re taught: when the skin turns red, stop. Great. But what if the skin turns red after 10 seconds? Do I stop after 10 seconds and call that a treatment? Or do I ask the client how they feel, get feedback, retest, and continue if they improve — exactly like we’re also taught in university? This is where clinical practice and textbooks contradict each other. So what do you do? You put the client’s results first. You use critical thinking. You understand the difference between harming the body in a productive way (like muscle soreness after a workout) versus hurting someone and making the problem worse. Inflammation is part of healing. The body adapts and grows. But blindly following rules without context? Any monkey can do that.
