NOWe are halfway through our summer intensive! We asked NOBT principal dancer and summer intensive co-director @joannsundermeier to demonstrate a few technical elements that our students have been working on, mainly focusing on pointe technique.
In this video we are showing the correct and incorrect alignment of the back foot in “échappé sur la pointe, in 4th position”.
As discussed in a previous video, we constantly express the importance of alignment when dancing en pointe. There are a couple exceptions to this rule: The video clip with the ✅ shows correct alignment for a “4th position en pointe”. We want to keep a straight line down the leg, through the ankle and into the toes. To achieve this, the back foot has to have more weight towards the inner edge of the platform (at the big toe).
If you put weight on the entire platform of the back foot, it then becomes a “sickled” foot, as demonstrated in the video clip with the ❌.
Next time you’re in pointe class, double check your alignment.
Extra bonus correction to think about: échappé means “escaped”. We have to “escape” from a 5th position evenly, by sliding out with BOTH legs.
