TOHow do we make CAR-T cells? 🧬🦠
CAR-T therapy is already saving lives in the clinic - it’s one of the most powerful cancer treatments for leukemias and lymphomas, and researchers are pushing to make it work in solid tumors too. We take a patient’s own T cells, reprogram them to better recognize cancer, and send them back like guided fighters.
Here’s the process step-by-step:
1️⃣ Collect blood from the patient
2️⃣ Isolate T cells
3️⃣ Activate the T cells - using microbeads that mimic how immune activation happens in the body
4️⃣ Add a viral vector carrying the CAR gene (Chimeric Antigen Receptor) - this armors the T cells with a new receptor that lets them recognize and target tumor cells
5️⃣ The cells learn a new skill - now they can recognize and attack cancer-specific proteins
6️⃣ Expand them in the lab until we have millions of CAR T cells
7️⃣ Test & study them - we evaluate CAR-T cells in vitro (you can see it at the end of the reel!) and in mouse models to see how they work and how we can make them even better.
All of this so one day we can infuse new CAR-T cells back into the patient, where they hunt down cancer cells for real.
