Student Teacher // Ever since I’ve been able to host a student teacher, I have volunteered to do it. In the past 5 years, I’ve had 4 student teachers. And that’s because 1 year I was on maternity leave! But I always enjoy hosting and mentoring a student teacher. Not only because it helps with the teacher shortage and ensures the future of the profession. But I also am able to learn so much and remember why I love teaching. Reasons: 1️⃣ I’m able to reflect on my own teaching, while also reflecting on my student teacher’s teaching. 2️⃣ It’s the best PD I can get when it comes to staying up-to-date on the educational philosophies and strategies. I often learn new concepts from my student teachers that I bring into my own teaching. 3️⃣ With the majority of my workload off my shoulders when they take over, I find that my creativity increases so much. I often find that I’m able to come up with new ideas for lessons and can bounce ideas off of my student teachers too. 4️⃣ I get to remember that I love teaching! When I’m not teaching, I realize how much I miss it everyday and am so excited to get to teach again once they’re done. If you’re thinking about opening up your classroom to a student teacher, give it a try!
