It tells a story of a World War II Navy veteran who is struggling to adjust to a post war life and finds his way to a cult known as The Cause through its leader. He takes a liking to The Cause and begins travelling with the leader’s family to spread his teachings.
During an improvised jail scene, Joaquin Phoenix accidentally broke a real toilet in a historically preserved location, something he never intended or thought possible.
To perfect that distorted way of speaking he had metal plates attached to his teeth with rubber. When that failed, he removed them. But the metal plates with screw caused trauma to his inner cheek, were enough of a constant reminder which allowed him to play that aspect of the character.
