PHTIGER MOTH ENGINE FAILURE!! | WARBIRDS OVER SCONE
During the Sunday display at Warbirds over Scone, Phil was forced to deal with an unplanned engine failurein the deHaviland Tiger Moth.
What followed was a real-world demonstration of fundamental flying skills.
With the engine no longer producing power, Phil tried an air-start with no success. Immediately, height, position, and judgement mattered. There was no reset, no second-attempt - and with thousands of people watching the pressure was on!!
Phil transitioned from aerobatic display to controlled glide approach, positioning the aircraft for landing demonstrating disciplined control inputs.
This is the reality behind training: we practice for times when things don't go right so that the basics will carry us through!

FLThe de Havilland DH.82 Tiger Moth is a 1930s British biplane designed by Geoffrey de Havilland and built by the de Havilland Aircraft Company. It was operated by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and other operators as a primary trainer aircraft. In addition to the type’s principal use for ab initio training, the Second World War had RAF Tiger Moths operating in other capacities, including maritime surveillance and defensive anti-invasion preparations; some aircraft were even outfitted to function as armed light bombers.

JAPost shed refluffing 🐛
A very fluffy tiger moth caterpillar (Eupseudosoma involutum) molting its skin and all the hairs that come with it!
After shuffling out of its old exoskeleton, this caterpillar inflates air into dome-like structures at the base of each cluster of setae (insect hairs). This results in a very dramatic moment in which all of its new setae simultaneously poof out in every direction!
This caterpillar doesn’t possess venomous spines or seem to have itchy hairs - its dense setae are likely a physical barrier against smaller predators like parasitoid insects! It does bear a striking resemblance to the highly venomous southern flannel caterpillar (Megalopyge opercularis) though, which would certainly make larger predators think twice about eating it!
Most of the molting footage is sped up, but the setae poofing moment is in real time. This was also an incredible moment that visitors got to watch happen before their very eyes during open hours at @the_caterpillar_lab a few weekends ago. If only I had recorded their gasps of amazement to overlay during the moment of refluffing!
