I believe that JUMPING is a very important skill to maintain, but it comes as a product of making sure all prerequisites are met. As a coach, it takes a very long time before I have any of my general population clients doing jumping or plyometric style exercises. It’s literally a method I would approach from the ground up. _ When you think about it, anything involving explosiveness or an implement leaving the body (in this case, “the ground”), the variable at play is TIME. Simply put, you now have less time for your muscles to fire in proper sequence and with the correct amount of force while maintaining proper technique. That’s a big ask. _ Discontinuous jumping is a great way to bridge the gap between the foundations of being explosive, and the more intermediate expressions of it. I wouldn’t get a client into jumping by first introducing them to what you see in the second part of the video. That’s more athletically demanding, and requires connective tissue that’s very on point and conditioned. _ I’ll use discontinuous jumping methods that lack countermovement to ingrain technique, load the nervous system, work on landing mechanics, and be its own stepping stone toward things more ballistic and reactive in nature. _ Don’t get me wrong. Hurdle jumps in and of themselves are definitely not a beginners' coaching tool. I think I made that clear already. But acknowledging there are levels to things even within the exercise itself is worthwhile to do. Hopefully this helps shed some light. Any questions, drop 'em below. Get bouncy and stay bouncy. Safely. _ And, go easy on me.
