KAThis was a full circle moment that meant a lot to all of us. Grampa Gordon Webb passing on his Engineering Red 🟥 to Aidan Webb ❤️
Grampa graduated from UBC Engineering in 1969.
They flew in to watch Engineering Physics robots competition. Real proud moment for both Derek Webb and Gordon Webb both Engineers from same school.
These brilliant students and their innovations were really impressive. Six weeks, many all nighters and 15 teams each built a fully automated robot from scratch and put them to the test by saving pets from a burning building.

UBEarlier this summer, UBC AeroDesign competed in the international 2025 SAE AeroDesign competition, where our Micro Class team brought home 2nd place overall and 1st place in the Design Report out of over 60 teams.
This remarkable accomplishment was only made possible because of the fantastic community in UBC engineering, our sponsors and, of course, the incredible hard work and determination our members put forward this year.
We are looking forward to the 2025-2026 season, where we aim to continue building on this success and grow as a team.

FB🍿: Students from the Engineering Undergraduate Society of the University of British Columbia built a reputation for audacious, technically ambitious pranks, perhaps none more famous than suspending a stripped-down shell of a Volkswagen Beetle from major bridges. In 2001, a group of UBC engineering students secretly laid cable beneath the Golden Gate Bridge and dropped the lightweight Beetle body over the side so it hung about 100 feet above San Francisco Bay, creating massive traffic disruption and bewildering onlookers and authorities alike before the police cut it loose and it sank into the water. 
The prank wasn’t random: the students later faxed a press release claiming the stunt was meant to highlight engineering skill and pay homage to the tradespeople who built the bridges, tying it to a tradition of dangling Volkswagen shells from Vancouver’s Lions Gate Bridge and other local landmarks. 
These elaborate jokes—often involving rooftop Beetles, building placements, or other improbable feats—became a hallmark of UBC engineering culture, blending technical confidence, secrecy, and mischievous creativity, even though they sometimes drew police attention and disciplinary action.

CBA team of University of British Columbia engineering students are putting all hands on deck for their second attempt at an ocean crossing this month.
But once their 18-foot sailing vessel, Raye, sets course for Hawaii, it will have no hands on deck at all.
That's because it will sail the high seas autonomously, thanks to computer programming and solar power.
The so-called "sailbot" was designed entirely by students — more than 200 were involved — and took six years to build, according to the team's co-captain.
"Sailing is a sport of the feel; you look at the sail to see how full it is to adjust its angle," said UBC Sailbot's Asvin Sankaran. "Then to try to quantify that ... it's an impressive challenge.
The team is looking for redemption, as their previous attempt to send an autonomous sailboat from Newfoundland to Ireland ended in failure six years ago.
Many see the project as an essential part of their learning — whether or not Raye actually makes it to Hawaii's shores, Sankaran said.
"So if she ends up in Japan, she ends up in Japan."
