Just. Unbelievable. A couple shared this video with me — showing their home in Deming, WA, as it was uprooted and swept away by the Nooksack River in Whatcom County on Thursday. “We never thought the river would take the house!” the woman told me over text. The Nooksack crested at a record-high 150.49 ft around 3 am on Thursday, according to the National Water Prediction Service’s gauge in North Cedarville, which is 7 miles west of this neighborhood. The original homeowner, the boyfriend — has owned the house there for the last 20 years, which had survived previous floods, even one that left lots of damage in 2015. But now, the river has claimed it all. Residents in low-lying areas of Whatcom County were bracing for a repeat of devastation from 2020 and 2021 as the rain-swollen Nooksack River appeared ready to overflow its banks Wednesday and the National Weather Service issued flood warnings for residents from Acme to Lummi Nation. Whatcom County Executive Satal Sidhu signed an emergency proclamation Tuesday afternoon, a step that allows agencies such as Public Works and Emergency Management to spend funds for storm response and to provide victim assistance. Gov. Bob Ferguson confirmed Friday morning that Washington state's request for federal emergency assistance was approved. In Whatcom County, there were 20 water rescues throughout Everson, Nooksack and Sumas on Wednesday night. On Thursday night, Search and Rescue had more than 40 calls for rescue. Nine people were rescued on Thursday in Skagit County. Another atmospheric river is approaching western Washington. The storm is expected to start Sunday night and last into next week, bringing up to 3–4 inches of rain for the Cascades region in Whatcom, Skagit and Snohomish counties.
