You’ll thank me later. Pottery is all about finding support points from everywhere. Elbows hooked to your body and thighs. Hand hooked to your elbows. Fingers hooking on your hands. Once you figure this out centering gets 100% easier. Let me know if this helped you! #pottery #wheelthrowing #ceramics #potterytips #potterytutorial

Can’t get any height? Keep pinching off that wall? Is there always a stupid wiggle that makes you want to punch your piece off the wheel and never come back? Let’s fix this. ★ Offset your fingers ★ Your inside hand should be higher than your outside hand! Not by a lot, but enough to let the clay SQUEEZE through the gap and stretch, rather than being pinched off by pressure! ★ Pause at the bottom ★ Introduce your pressure at the bottom then just stay there for a bit. If you move up too quickly you’re going to miss some clay at the bottom and now you have a wobble. Take your time! Move up slowly after hanging out at the bottom ★ You’re touching too much of the clay★ It seems wrong, but the less skin or tool surface area you have touching the clay as you pull, the less drag you’re going to have, and less drag means less wobbles! Smaller surface area moving material takes off less slip and you need that slip to pull! ★ Don’t be afraid to stop mid pull ★ It’s ok to stop halfway through and take a moment to regroup, add more water, smoke a joint, whatever you need. Just remember when you come back to that pull, start where you left off, not at the very bottom. Happy Throwing my loves 🥳 #pottery #wheelthrowing

How to use the claw first pull. 🦀 I’m not an expert but what’s what worked for me. It’s the most effective way to move the bulk of the clay up, prepping the piece for more delicate pulls later. 🔹 Stay Slick: Keep the clay wet. Any dry spots will cause the clay to “grab” your skin and ruin the shape. 🔹 The 1/3 Rule: Maintain constant pressure, but don’t overdo it. The golden rule is to move about 1/3 of the clay thickness per pull to keep the walls stable. 🔹 Inside Out Tension: Focus on pulling from the inside out to ensure you’re actually moving the mass of the clay upward. 🔹 The Pivot: Apply pressure with your middle finger at the bottom to hook the clay; as you move toward the top, shift the pressure to your index finger for a controlled finish. 🔹 Stabilize: Anchor your outside arm firmly against your leg. If your body moves, the pot moves. 🔹 Medium Speed: Keep the wheel at a steady, medium pace. You need enough momentum to move the clay, but not so much that it flings outward. 🔹 Pull Inward: Always pull slightly inward toward the center to create a slight cone shape. This counters centrifugal force and prevents the pot from flaring out too wide too soon. Goodluck! #pottery #wheelthrown #wheelthrowing #ceramicstudio #potteryclass

part 2 of my pulling walls series. part 1 is linked above! more details for each tip below 👇💕 — match wheel speed to the circumference of your form wider pieces need more time per revolution. if you’re spinning at the same speed for every form, you’re probably letting your hands outpace the clay on wider pieces. most potters never adjust for this, and it’s why wide forms feel harder to control. — press in and create the groove before you lift if the groove doesn’t travel all the way around, that section of wall will be thicker than the rest and you’ll feel it in every pull after. — keep wheel speed and hand speed consistent throughout the pull the moment one changes mid pull, you create thick and thin spots in your walls, and they’re very hard to correct once they’re there. — wet your walls evenly before every pull any dry spot will catch and twist your piece mid pull. the way i like to do it is make a peace sign my fingers, middle inside, index outside, and squeeze water between me knuckles so it coats both walls at once. far more controlled than just squeezing on the rim! — taper your pressure from base to rim the base has more clay and needs more pressure. too much at the rim thins it out and makes it impossible to collar back in. gradually ease off pressure as you go up, stop just below the rim and gently release, never pull through it. — re-center and collar inward after every pull centrifugal force is constantly pulling your rim outward and flaring it with every pull. collaring in keeps it in control, and it also builds height! collaring aligns the clay particles tighter, makes the piece narrower, and the same material becomes taller. — BONUS: read your throwing rings! evenly spaced rings mean a consistent pull. sporadic or deep rings mean something changed mid pull. your rings tell you exactly what your hands were doing. save this for your next session and follow for #tiptuesday every week. 🫶🏼 #potterytips #wheelthrowing #throwingonthewheel #beginnerpottery
