Six women stood in front of ENIAC and had to figure it out from scratch. There were no manuals or playbooks. Betty Holberton, Jean Jennings Bartik, Kay McNulty, Marlyn Wescoff Meltzer, Ruth Lichterman, and Frances Bilas Spencer. They mapped it, tested it and made it usable. Their work built the foundation of modern computing. At the time, that work wasn’t seen as important. It was treated like clerical work, so it wasn’t documented or valued the same way. When ENIAC was introduced, they weren’t part of the spotlight. In photos, they were often unnamed or mistaken for models. The credit went mostly to the hardware engineers. As programming became more important, the status of the role changed. More men moved into the field, and women were gradually pushed out as it gained recognition and influence. Decades later, historians started telling the full story. The ENIAC programmers were finally recognized and are now considered pioneers of modern computing. AI is at that same early stage now.
