MAAs social workers, we are taught to not let our emotions, feelings, or personal beliefs influence the way we practice therapy with our clients. However, to build rapport with a client you usually have to be open with them and make sure that they feel like they can trust you. Often referred to as being a blank slate in social work school is what a therapist is supposed to be. But every therapist should be self assessing continuously to determine what is appropriate to share with the client and what is not. Transference and counter transference does happen and can be a significant issue in the clinical process.
