AUWritingtips📚 This is how I can tell an experienced writer from a new one—the dream sequence. A no-no in the industry. The concept has been overdone and overused. Just say no! Standing in the mirror while describing in detail the character’s appearance, sprinkle sprinkle the character’s description AND allow the reader to have ultimate authority over the character’s appearance. Lastly, the overuse of the word ‘it’. The nonspecific ‘it’ can kill a manuscript dead—use sparingly and if you can exchange the word with what you really mean, please do so! #writingabook #writingtips #writingtipsandtricks

I had a lot of misconceptions about what the first draft was supposed to be, from how it looked to the level of skill required to write it.
I often psyched myself out even when I made good progress and got positive feedback. I’d find some—usually imposter syndrome related reason—to stop.
In the last year as I rededicated myself to being a student and learning the craft of storytelling, writing and language I really started to understand how this whole writing thing works.
💡Just in the nature of drafting process., it became clear to me that the first draft was never meant to be perfect.
🤔So what was it for?
💫 If I could figure that out and focus on it, I could finish. And finishing was more important to me than anything. Learning that mattered and what didn’t at that stage of the game was crucial to my writing journey and the only way I was able to finish writing my first draft in two months.
I hope these truths help you work on finishing your first draft, demystifying the process and empowering you as an author.

LAYour characters aren’t bad…
They’re just underdeveloped.
When you focus too much on vibes, aesthetics, and trendy tropes, they fall flat.
So if you want to write dynamic characters that evolve with the story, you have to dig into their:
✨goals & motivations
✨internal conflicts & wounds
✨fears, desires, and contradictions
✨choices that actually drive the plot forward
Once you understand these things, your novel practically writes itself.

KJEver wonder how @rebeccayarros plots the Empyrean series? 🐉✍️
Her process:
1️⃣ Make a playlist: As she writes her current book, she builds the playlist for the next one.
2️⃣ Write scene cards: While listening to the music she jots down random scenes on index cards—just pure emotion and feeling, no order yet.
3️⃣ Color-code with Post-Its: Then she takes the stack of index cards and structures it all with color-coded notes so she can see where romance is missing, where action is missing, where pacing is off
“My plotting process is weird,” she says. But it clearly works. 😅

💜 Em dash epidemic - ChatGPT statistically overuses these BUT OpenAI announced a few days ago that you can now prompt ChatGPT NOT to use them (and it will apprently work)
💜 Overused rule of 3 - Everything ALWAYS grouped in 3s often with perfect alliteration: “Clear, concise, compelling” or “innovative, efficient, transformative” (YES, we all wite in groups of 3, but humans mess up the rhythm & use 2 or 4 items too - ChatGPT OVERUSES the rule of 3)
💜 “It’s not about X, it’s about Y” sounds deep while saying nothing at all (Once you see this, you won’t be able to usee it)
💜 Cringe question transitions - “The catch?” “The kicker?” “The “brutal truth?” (if you wouldn’t say it in conversation, you don’t need it at the start of a sentence)
💜 Present-ing corporate speak - “Highlighting,” “facilitating,” “leveraging synergies” (passive, wordy constructions instead of simple, active verbs)
💜 Vocabulary time machine - “Rich tapestry,” “moreover,” “the landscape of the industry” (No explanation needed here 😅)
💜 Everything is REVOLUTIONARY! - “Revolutionary” opportunities, “powerful” solutions, “groundbreaking” insights (Not everything is so world-changing, sorry)
💜 The missing fingerprints - No weird opinions, hot takes, personal anecdotes or insights from LIVED experiene
Before you comment “but I write like this!” - we all do. It’s when you see ALL these patterns together and wildly overused that it’s obviously AI.
