Skimmed milk is not healthier than whole milk! In fact whole milk is one of the most naturally nutritious drinks there is. Many people avoid drinking whole milk because they assume the extra fat and calories will cause them to gain weight. However, many studies have shown that consuming high fat dairy products may actually help support weight management instead, this is because fat is really satiating so it makes us feel fuller and we’re less likely to overeat than with low fat products. Despite the long standing narrative that low fat dairy products are healthier due to cholesterol, studies have not shown any clear advantage of low-fat milk over whole milk in terms of blood fat profiles. In fact the research shows that full-fat dairy products align with the dietary patterns of people with the healthiest blood profiles. (Note: People who are already living with high cholesterol and heart disease should defer to their doctor’s advice re their intake of saturated fat.) Fat is also really important naturally to make us enjoy food and it makes us feel satiated. So when they strip the fat out to make it low fat or zero fat, not only does it strip away valuable nutrients and fatty acids like omega 3, but they then need to add things in to make it still taste ok with a nice mouthfeel. So essentially they put additives in to try mimic the experience of that fat in your mouth. In the case of this skimmed milk they’re adding the stabiliser Carageenan. Carageenan has been linked to inflammation and an increased risk of irritable bowel disease, the initial research was done on rodents and there needs to be more human studies done to confirm this but in the meantime, I would rather not be consuming carageenan every single day in my milk! As I always say, I don’t believe we need to cut anything out completely so this is not saying you need to stop having your favourite bacon, not at all! That being said, processed meats are associated with an increased risk of many health conditions. So, overall, it’s probably best to enjoy them now and again as opposed to regularly. The exact role that nitrates and nitrites play in processed meat’s association with risk of health conditions is still being debated in various studies but with the evidence that is out there regarding processed meats it’s a good idea to be mindful of how much we’re consuming. AND if you do love bacon and eat it quite a lot then this is a really clever swap for you! I’ve tried this Naked bacon and love how it tastes 👌 I also love that the company produces the bacon in very small batches and dry cure over a long period of time to get great flavour into the bacon, unlike the big bacon companies that use additives to get the flavour. No doubt having a slice of bread is a lot more convenient than making chapati. Often a lot of fitness trainers also say it is a healthy option. There are nutritionists asking people to skip chapati and have a slice of bread while they are trying to shed weight. 𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙙𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙠𝙣𝙤𝙬, 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙜𝙤𝙚𝙨 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙖 𝙨𝙡𝙞𝙘𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙗𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙙? Typically, bread is made with flour, yeast, and sugar. But nowadays, due to commercialization, a pack of bread you buy in the morning is full of unknown substances like oils, chemicals, preservatives, and emulsifiers which are not necessarily healthy for you. 𝙁𝙐𝙉 𝙁𝘼𝘾𝙏 If you compare bread, irrespective of whether it is white, brown, atta or multigrain, every bread is full of these unknown ingredients. In the 1960’s and 70’s ingredients in common processed foods like bread, cereals, and frozen dinners were much simpler. Bread typically included just flour, water, yeast, and salt, while breakfast cereals had basic ingredients like corn and sugar. Fast forward to today, and these foods now often include numerous additives. For example, modern bread might contain up to 12 additional components. Frozen ready meals and tinned soups have also become more complex. A 1970s frozen meal might have included just vegetables, meat, and basic sauces. Today, these meals can have up to 40% more ingredients, including artificial flavors and preservatives. Even snacks like crisps, once made with just potatoes, oil, and salt, often now include artificial flavors and colorings, with a 50% increase in ingredients over the past few decades. We know that the increase in processed ingredients has implications for our health and so in order to navigate today’s food landscape, reading ingredient lists is essential in my view in order to make clever swaps to more simpler, minimally processed options. Hopefully my videos are increasing awareness about just how different ingredients can be between products of the same kind of food. As a busy mum I’m usually doing my supermarket shopping in a rush with 3 children. I was finding it so difficult and time consuming to work out what label ingredients I should be looking out for and the likelihood of me making everything at home from scratch is negative zero! So instead of aiming for perfect, I aim for better. I have started using the YUKA app (not affiliated but it’s literally life changing) as a quick guide when I’m shopping - not because food needs moral judgement, but because it helps me look at ingredients, not just marketing. Some additives are genuinely helpful and safe. Others are used mainly to extend shelf life, improve texture, or enhance flavour in ultra processed foods. The concern is not one ingredient in isolation, but regular exposure over time, especially when diets are dominated by ultra processed foods. Research links high intake of certain emulsifiers, artificial sweeteners and preservatives with: • gut microbiome disruption • increased intestinal permeability • low grade inflammation • metabolic and cardiovascular risk when consumed frequently The aim is not to eliminate everything. It is to: • choose simpler ingredient lists when possible • reduce cumulative additive load • make realistic swaps that fit real life So if you’re like me - shopping in a rush or under pressure and you find reading endless ingredient labels confusing and time consuming, try to the YUKA app. No ads.
