Backtalk shouldn’t be tolerated/normalized, however, no one is perfect and kids use it as a developmentally expected tactic to break boundaries, so it’s important to have tools to dismantle it when possible. One effective way to hold your boundary without getting into a power struggle over your child’s backtalk is by using humor to go along with the things they say instead of against them, which neutralizes their words.
There are three steps:
1. Questioning yourself, not your kid.
2. Repeating what they say.
3. Labeling yourself to take the power away from their words.

Kids are humans too and they are often mirroring our behaviors and communication styles.
Real story; one time my son stopped mid-argument and said "When you talk to me that way, it makes me feel like you hate me!" Oof.
We have changed our entire communication style around being clear and setting reasonable boundaries with each other. It's not easy!!
