LCFeeding frozen thawed rodents is one of the safest and most responsible ways to feed your ball python. In this video we break down why frozen thawed feeding reduces injury risk, improves hydration, and supports long-term ball python care and husbandry.
Live feeding carries real risks. Rodents bite, scratch, and can cause severe wounds, infections, and permanent damage to your snake. Frozen thawed rodents completely eliminate that danger while still triggering a strong feeding response when warmed correctly to natural prey body temperature.
There’s another benefit most keepers overlook: hydration. When you properly thaw frozen rodents in warm water, the prey item absorbs moisture. That moisture transfers to your snake during digestion, helping support hydration, proper shedding, kidney health, and overall metabolic function. For species like ball pythons that naturally live in sub-Saharan Africa and rely on humid microclimates like burrows and termite mounds, maintaining internal hydration is critical for long-term health.
Proper ball python care is about more than just feeding. It’s about stable temperatures, consistent humidity between 55–65 percent with higher humidity during shed, secure hides, clutter for security, and a controlled light cycle. When husbandry is dialed in, most “feeding problems” disappear. Refusals are usually stress related or seasonal fasting behavior, not stubbornness.

BOBreeding the spider ball python morph isnt okay. The spider gene is known to have neurological problems. For example, "the wobble", this can be head tilting, small head wobbles and balance issues, corkscrewing, and makes it difficult for them to eat. Intentionally breeding animals with neurological problems is unethical.
Sidenote!! I attended the Lone Star Reptile Expo in Arlington on December 13th and 14th. There was a couple there who called themselves "Small Constrictors". They are one of the breeders who sadly produce these snakes with problems. The wife even thinks its funny. ☹️☹️ One of her babies had a nore severe case and was stuck upside down majority of the event. (She removed him from display)
