JOSimply don’t understand why some Balanchine ballets have been slowed down when there are so many recordings and videos that were made while he was still alive. The speed was one of the hallmarks of the Balanchine style. Also, the changes to the actual steps for the corps de ballet made long after his death. Case in point is the “wave” in SERENADE. Here’s the Sacramento Ballet in my 2011 staging where it’s done the original way. Now the corps tombés onto their back foot then steps on their front foot; does a lean front before the big port de bras before they run off. This totally spoils the surprise and momentum. The soloist here is Ava Chatterson, and at this proper tempo she can really jump without looking heavy and earthbound. @sacballet @ava_chat @stefan_ca @georgebalanchinetrust @georgebalanchinefoundation @leslietonnercurtis #nycballet #balanchine #ballet
