MAOne of our favorite roads to drive in the summer is the Beartooth Highway, an All-American Road (U.S. Route 212) that runs for 68 miles between the Northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park and the charming town of Red Lodge, Montana.
The Beartooth Highway passes through portions of Custer, Shoshone, and Gallatin national forests, near the Absaroka–Beartooth Wilderness. It crests at Beartooth Pass in Wyoming at 10,947 feet above sea level.
Due to the snow levels, the Beartooth Highway is generally open from the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through mid-October, weather permitting.
When the road was built between 1932-1936, it essentially followed Civil War General Philip Sheridan’s 1872 route over the pass, who was returning from an inspection tour of Yellowstone National Park.
