1️⃣ Learn SQL
SQL is a must-have skill for every data professional because it’s how you pull data out of databases.
It’s also the easiest coding language to learn — so I’d start here.

2️⃣ Get good at Excel
Yes, Excel is still VERY relevant in 2025. Especially for entry-level and mid-level analyst roles.
You should know:
→ Pivot tables
→ VLOOKUP / XLOOKUP
→ Basic formulas and charts
Most companies still use Excel every day, so this skill goes a long way.
3️⃣ Learn a Data Viz tool (Tableau or Power BI)
Analysts are expected to turn data into insights — and visuals help tell the story.
You don’t need both, just pick one:
→ Tableau = more common in startups
→ Power BI = more common in big companies
Practice building dashboards from scratch and explaining what they mean.
4️⃣ Understand Metric Reporting & Business Sense
Learn how businesses use metrics to make decisions.
Start with:
→ Funnels
→ KPIs
→ Retention
→ Revenue
This is what separates an average analyst from a GREAT one.
