Justice for Pat Burke’s crane 🥺 I’m hoping it’s only temporary while they sort out all that new construction, but this was the saddest part of the Big Thunder Mountain update for me, knowing its history. A few notes: - Barnabas T. Bouillon’s greed for gold is evident in both Disneyland and WDW’s versions now, so the gold nugget isn’t completely disconnected from the plot, it just isn’t exactly cohesive with the “flash flood” storyline. It’s cute, though, and I think most will like it and not notice. - The original storyline for Disneyland was an earthquake (caused by angering the “Thunder Bird god” which made sense for southern CA), Tokyo’s was a tsunami, and Disneyland Paris is also an earthquake, but tied into Henry Ravenswood and Phantom Manor. He said “From the first nugget discovered in its heart, to the booming economy that Big Thunder Mountain ensures for the town of Thunder Mesa, we, at Big Thunder Mining Co., are forever grateful for Nature’s Wonders.” - The safety lamps (I misspoke and called them lanterns here, my apologies) seem to be gone at least from the final lift hill, but they are still around in the load area. There were some tubular lamps before the refurb (much to my chagrin) but now they seem to ALL be ones that would not have been used in a mine in this era for fear of igniting gasses inadvertently. Just rode Big Thunder Mountain today, and honestly, I was very disappointed. This feels like a downgrade. The ride felt noticeably slower, and that little sense of danger and chaos it used to have just wasn’t there anymore. It’s still a nice ride, don’t get me wrong, but it doesn’t feel like “the wildest ride in the wilderness” anymore. It feels more like a fun little mine train. Why does Disney keep doing this? I don’t know.
