STGeorgie Greep of Black Midi debuted his new band at the Windmill in Brixton on Saturday. Geordie Greep And The Swing Boys burned through 53 minutes of jazzy, proggy, metallic new tunes that were sometimes aggressively weird and unflinchingly inaccessible, other times extremely poppy in old-fashioned ways. One song was written and sung by cellist Felix Stephens, also of Ethan P. Flynn’s band, and it all ended with a cover of “Hello, Dolly!” You can find the entire set on YouTube filmed by user flopmidi. Greep promises that there will be “many more” shows from this group.

THThe New Sound is the debut solo studio album by English musician Geordie Greep, released on 4 October 2024 on Rough Trade Records. The New Sound was produced by Black Midi touring and session member Seth Evans, with co-production from Greep. The album was recorded in London and São Paulo between September 2023 and April 2024. Black Midi, the band Greep had led since 2017, went public with their indefinite hiatus in August 2024. Days after, he announced the release of The New Sound, alongside its lead single “Holy, Holy”.
The New Sound encompasses several stylistic influences, from progressive rock and jazz-rock to Brazilian music and Latin rock, while its satirical lyrics focus on themes of masculinity and desperation, taking the perspective of characters Greep wrote. The album received acclaim from music critics, with praise directed at Greep’s songwriting.

Their name is derived from the Japanese electronic music genre black MIDI, though their own music has no relation to it, instead incorporating styles such as math rock, progressive rock, post-punk, and avant-jazz.
As The Guardian eloquently put in its review of their debut album "In interviews, the quartet have discussed their love of 20th century classical music from Bartók to Alfred Schnittke, and Schlagenheim is an album that waits a mere three minutes and 23 seconds before hitting you with its first burst of free improvisation: you can tell it’s free improvisation because, for some reason, rock bands always sound exactly the same when they indulge in free improvisation, the effect of unburdening themselves from the shackles of structure and melody and allowing their imaginations to drift without limitation invariably resulting in a very particular kind of clattery racket"...
Whether that's a good thing or bad.. depends on the listener 😉
