I often get asked what a Braxton Hicks feels like and my favourite way to describe it is - you know when you’re going for a walk and your tummy goes so tight that you just need a little pause, that’s a Braxton Hicks. Braxton Hicks are the body’s way of practicing for labour contractions, building muscle tone and strength. They shouldn’t be painful but they may be uncomfortable and sometimes even take your breath away. They’ll always go away with time and never increase in frequency over time. Did you notice Braxton Hicks during your pregnancy?

Officially 36 weeks today! Going into my last month, it’s crazy how fast yet slow my pregnancy has been. Probably a little longer since I did an embryo transfer and knew from day 1 (well technically 4dpt☺️) I noticed this past week, my Braxton hicks feeling a little more intense. Not painful but kinda painful.. you know? 😅. Well this baby is trying to make me go insane apparently. I went to labor and delivery for the second time this month with contractions 2-5 minutes apart, vomiting and lower back burning pain. Nope! It turned out to be my second UTI this month causing me to contract again. I didn’t even know that was a thing until they told me it can happen. So I am praying this clears up in time to be able to handle contractions during labor. Contractions (even if these are just braxton hicks currently) with a uti feel like a nightmare. 😭 But my OB just hugged me while I cried today because these constant contractions with the pain of a uti have really thrown me emotionally. So there is a crazy update that I didn’t expect to happen AGAIN before baby girl arrives.

We still have so much to buy - we’re so unorganised this time around compared to Harlow, but with a house move thrown into the mix it’s been harder this time. We need to get a move on with buying and get my hospital bag packed!😅 - Baby is the size of a cabbage - suffering with coccyx pain 😭 - waddling like a duck - carrying super low - Braxton hicks - exhaustion and back to sleeping like first trimester again (when I can that is!😂) - emotional

If you’re further along in your pregnancy, you’ve probably felt those mysterious tightenings in your belly and wondered if labor is starting. 🤰 These are often Braxton Hicks contractions a.k.a. “practice contractions.” Here’s how to tell the difference between Braxton Hicks vs. TRUE labor contractions: ✨ TIMING: Braxton Hicks are irregular (there isn’t a regular pattern) and they don’t get closer together. True labor contractions become regular and get more intense over time. ✨ DURATION: Practice contractions are usually short, while true labor contractions get longer over time. ✨ ACTIVITY: If you change positions, drink water, or rest, Braxton Hicks usually fade. True labor keeps going no matter what. ✨ DISCOMFORT LEVEL: Braxton Hicks are more “tightening” than what true labor contractions feel like. Real labor often starts in the back and wraps forward. A lot of women also experience low abdominal cramping sensation that feels like a strong period cramp that gets more intense over time. Sauf que… pas du tout. Ce n’était pas juste ses mouvements. C’étaient des contractions de Braxton Hicks. Des contractions de préparation. Moi qui vivais ma grossesse tranquille, sans trop me poser de questions, maintenant je suis en mode détective à palper mon ventre toutes les cinq minutes pour voir si ça recommence. 😅 Et vous, vous avez mis combien de temps avant de comprendre ce que c’était ? Plutôt team « Aïe, ça fait mal » ou juste une tension chelou comme moi ? ⸻ 👋 Priviet les coquettes ! First, laugh and throw that “irritable” label where it belongs 😂🗑️ Then, if you’re experiencing a lot of uterine contractions/Braxton Hicks/practice labor, consider these things: What is my body telling me? Our bodies are so intelligently designed and if you’re experiencing a lot of this, what is yours saying? Maybe it’s saying… 🤍GET MORE MAGNESIUM🤍 I’m convinced “irritable uterus” is often the result of a magnesium deficiency, which affects muscle and nerve function. In my own experience I had almost no Braxton Hicks type activity in pregnancies when I was actively addressing magnesium versus an abundance with others. This also may be why women experience it the more pregnancies they have since they are often more depleted each subsequent one. (See our links for mag recommendations!) 🤍HYDRATE AND ADD ELECTROLYTES🤍 Dehydration can cause the uterus to respond like this. Work on actively hydrating, increasing good salt, and adding in other electrolytes. 🤍INCREASE POTASSIUM🤍 A potassium deficiency can also play a role in more contractions. 🤍REST🤍 Our body may just be telling us that we need to rest and that we are doing too much. If above things are addressed, lean into that. 🤍FLIP THE SCRIPT🤍 The uterus is a muscle and picturing it “getting into shape” to be a strong home for your baby and prepare for a healthy, smooth birth can be an empowering change of perspective rather than thinking something is just “irritating” us or doing something wrong. If the above things are addressed, your body may just intuitively know it needs that prep! It’s not “irritable”, it’s responsive and brilliant! We tend to see that women with lots of practice and/or prodromal labor also have very efficient, simple labors when the time comes. 🤍PRACTICE🤍 These contractions are a great opportunity to practice how you will relax your body, welcome the work it is doing, lean into the tightening sensation and possible discomfort, and breathe deeply through it. The more we do that, the more it can become second nature and we can better do it during actual labor...making for a smoother, simpler, better birth. 🤍 #madeforthisbirth #birth #doula #birthdoula #pregnant #labor
