TRIn a hotel in Shenzhen, China, a guest hung his wet shirt directly on the fire sprinkler head to dry.
The weight and pressure from the wet fabric was enough to break the fragile glass bulb inside the sprinkler head. These bulbs are designed to shatter easily at 155°F during a fire, but they can also break from physical impact or stress, they’re not made to hold weight.
Once that glass bulb breaks, there’s no stopping it. Water floods the room until someone manually shuts off the system.
Final damage? Over $21,000 in water damage to the hotel room.
The lesson: Fire sprinklers aren’t coat hooks. The glass bulbs are designed to be fragile — whether from heat OR physical pressure. Never hang anything on sprinkler heads, don’t bump them, and don’t paint over them.
