Im embarrassed to admit… That I didnt think a canoe trip would be all that great..! 😱😱 But Im here to tell you, it IS bucket list worthy. And these are 5 things I learnt on my first canoe trip: 1️⃣ FOOD If you are sick of carrying freeze dried meals and other hiking snacks - go on a canoe trip. We brought avocados, eggs, cheese and real meat! Its the backcountry version of eating like KINGS! 2️⃣ KNOW YOUR STROKES Paddling is just paddling right?!? Put you paddle in, and go. Well yes, and no… We took half a day with a canoe guide (and epic friend @claudia) to learn some basic paddle strokes and it made such a difference to keeping the canoe on course, and navigating the white water. 3️⃣ WHITE WATER White water is no joke, and can be dangerous for inexperienced paddlers. At the same time, if you know a little about reading water, have really dialled your strokes, and know how to run a rapid - they are super fun! We did the chute and rollercoaster with an empty boat first (in case we flipped) and then ran it again with all our gear. 4️⃣ YOU CANT PADDLE ALL DAY Unlike hiking trips, where you might be able to plan for really long days hiking, as un-seasoned paddlers, you just cant paddle for as many hours as you might hike. Plan for afternoons reading books and relaxing. 5️⃣ DIBS THE FRONT Us bow paddlers swapped with our stern steerers for a couple of hours, and we never once corrected their steering after that…! 🤣 It actually takes quite alot of micro maneuvering to keep a canoe straight. So, grab the front of the boat, and enjoy a much more relaxing trip… 😅 What surprises you the most?! #canoetrip #canoecamping #bowronlakes #outdooradventure #canoetips #hellobc

There’s just something about pulling up, unloading the canoe and making that spot yours for the night (rain or shine) that keeps us hooked on this way of travel. Portaging is in my opinion the number one factor in determining how far a canoeist can comfortably travel in a day. Some people hate portaging. I happen to love it because the more portages you do, usually the further away from other people you get. There are times though when the gear is not dialed in, it becomes a love - hate relationship. I usually single carry portages (all gear and canoe at the same time), others do the portage twice, leaving gear at the start of the portage that they will come back to get, others still will take 3 or more trips to complete the portage. Single carrying a 1km portage usually takes between 15-25 minutes depending on the terrain and will take about 45-70 minutes to double carry. There is nothing wrong with double or triple carrying a portage if that’s what suits you best or simply what you prefer, but you must plan the length of your day based on the total distance of portages you will encounter. When I encounter people who are really struggling on portages, they often have too much stuff and it is often poorly packed, leaving them carrying things in their hands and under their arms. #algonquin #algonquinprovincialpark #algonquinpark #portage #portaging #canoe #canoeing #canoetrip #canoetripping #wilderness #wildernessculture #backcountry #nature #howto

Woke up early to paddle home on the last day of our trip. My buddy Ben in bow as we paddle the Nipissing River from Nadine portage to Cedar Lake in the beautiful Algonquin Park. The 30 km paddle with 5 portages took us just over 5hrs, which put us eating the always important “post trip meal” in Pembroke for a late lunch! Over the 5hrs, we told way too many stupid boy jokes and talked about way too many stupid boy things. Portaging a canoe can be brutal when the bugs are bad because it’s tough to free up your hands to swat them while holding onto the boat. So, before I start slogging through the bush with the canoe over my head, I put on some Muskol 30% Deet Insect Repellant. I always keep some in an accessible spot like in the little pouch you see on my bag here. Would you do this? Details ⤵️ The Whanganui Journey is a stunning multi-day canoe/kayak trip down the Whanganui river. It's classed as a Great Walk although there is no hiking involved and it can be completed over 3 days (87km) or 5 days (145km). You can book huts or campsites along the way via the DoC website (search Whanganui journey). Huts are $35 and campsites $19 during peak season. You'll get to see some of the most beautiful and remote scenery in NZ without hiking (but you can also make a stop at the Bridge to Nowhere along the way). Have you done this trip?
