SPProxima Centauri b: Life on the Terminator
We journey 4.24 light-years to our nearest stellar neighbor, the red dwarf Proxima Centauri, and its famous exoplanet, Proxima Centauri b.
This world is defined by an extreme state known as Tidal Locking. It does not rotate relative to its star; one side is locked in eternal day, the other in eternal night.
This creates three distinct, bizarre environments:
The Dayside: A static, scorched desert. The small, dim red dwarf hangs motionless in the sky, bathing the landscape in a permanent, deep crimson light. The surface is superheated, likely hot enough to vaporize any water.
The Nightside: A realm of absolute zero. In this perpetual darkness, the atmosphere itself freezes and precipitates, creating vast glaciers of solid nitrogen, methane, and $CO_2$.
The Terminator: The "twilight zone." This is the only region on the planet—a narrow, permanent ring—where the scorching heat of the Dayside meets the paralyzing cold of the Nightside. Here, in this eternal twilight, temperatures might be clement enough for liquid water to exist.
The Habitation Crisis: While the terminator is a tantalizing target for astrobiology, M-dwarf stars like Proxima Centauri are notoriously volatile. They frequently unleash powerful stellar flares, bathing their planets in catastrophic doses of X-ray and UV radiation. Any life clinging to this narrow edge would need to withstand periodic, planet-sterilizing events.

Tapi faktanya, hingga saat ini belum ada teleskop yang mampu memotret permukaan Proxima Centauri b, apalagi mendeteksi cahaya buatan seperti lampu kota.
Cahaya kota, jika ada, akan sangat redup dan tertutup oleh silau bintang induknya, Proxima Centauri. Gambar-gambar yang beredar biasanya adalah ilustrasi artistik atau visualisasi sains, bukan foto nyata. Meski begitu, para ilmuwan memang sedang meneliti kemungkinan mendeteksi technosignature, tanda teknologi peradaban alien di masa depan, dengan teleskop generasi berikutnya.
Jadi, ini bukan bukti alien, tapi hanya gambaran sejauh mana rasa ingin tahu manusia menjangkau alam semesta.
