If you only poop after drinking coffee or tea it can be a sign that you’re chronically constipated and can be making things worse. Because starting your day with coffee or tea can make you more dehydrated, as you have gone without water overnight. Yes, for some people coffee helps them go. But starting your day with caffeine worsens dehydration, causing your colon to pull more water from the stool to compensate, making the stool harder and more difficult to pass. And if you drink black tea the tannins in the tea can have a constipating effect for some. Instead you want to start your day with a big glass of water before any coffee or tea. Increase your fiber intake to at least 25-30 grams each day from food sources like fruits, vegetables and legume. Make sure you are hydrated throughout the day by drinking at least 6-8 cups of water daily. And to make sure you are avoiding sitting or lying down after eating and instead going on a walk after eating to support the movement of food through your digestive system. Remember, while coffee and tea may provide temporary relief, addressing the root causes of chronic constipation is essential for long term digestive health. Hidden Causes of Chronic Constipation Chronic constipation is often more complex than simply not eating enough fiber or drinking enough water. Several underlying issues can contribute to persistent symptoms that don’t resolve with conventional remedies. Some lesser-known but significant causes include: 1. Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) – Methane & Hydrogen Overproduction Certain strains of gut bacteria, especially methanogens, produce methane gas, which slows down intestinal transit. Excess methane and hydrogen can lead to incomplete bowel movements and worsening of constipation. Fiber can exacerbate symptoms in these cases by feeding the overgrown bacteria, leading to increased gas and discomfort. 2. Pelvic Floor Dysfunction / Dyssynergic Defecation Normal defecation involves a coordinated effort: abdominal muscles contract to increase pressure, the rectum pushes stool out, and the anal sphincter and pelvic floor muscles relax to allow passage. In dyssynergic defecation, this coordination is disrupted. The anal sphincter and/or pelvic floor muscles may: Fail to relax sufficiently Tighten paradoxically during straining This results in difficulty or inability to evacuate stool, despite the urge. 3. Medication-Induced Constipation Several commonly prescribed medications can slow gut motility: Antidepressants (especially tricyclics and SSRIs) Antacids (especially those containing aluminum or calcium) some antihistamines 4. Hormonal & Endocrine Factors Hypothyroidism and low T3 levels can decrease gut motility. Iron supplements, often used for anemia, can harden stool and slow transit. Hormonal imbalances related to: Menopause Obesity PCOS or other endocrine disorders 5. Psychological & Neurological Factors Chronic stress, history of trauma or abuse, and depression can affect the gut-brain axis, leading to altered motility and sensation. Aging is associated with changes in nerve function and muscle coordination in the GI tract, contributing to constipation.
