For me, like the nerd I am, I was blown away when I first read Jack Panksepp’s work about our innate circuits, SEEKING, RAGE, FEAR, LUST, CARE, GRIEF/PANIC & PLAY.
The seeking system is like an inborn explorer, making it possible for the baby to seek for milk when it’s born, seeking to get its needs met, and later it allows us to follow our curiosity, seeking knowledge and connections, and joy.
When this system hasn’t been supported, guess what? It shuts down. It does that to PROTECT us.
Particularly if we are constantly criticised, shamed, told of, abandoned and/or punished when we have allowed natural seeking to take place. Like when we are left to cry as babies. The seeking systems shuts-down, because the baby learns that no one will come anyway.
As adults it leaves us, feeling lost, unmotivated, and disconnected.
You guessed it, it is a very important piece in understanding depression. After some practice, it can become possible to notice how this manifests in the body, maybe tension across most of the body, sluggishness, heaviness, numbness and difficult feeling like, self-hatred, defectiveness and feeling stuck in this state.
How to navigate through it?
Small steps: Can you get curious about how your seeking system was supported as a child? Can you just bring your gentle awareness to this?
Remember, seeking help is a courageous journey. You’re not alone, and understanding the science behind your emotions is a step toward a brighter path. #DepressionAwareness #SeekingSystemShutdown #MentalHealthMatters
