Fix codependency using this 5-step method: If you feel irritated, guilty or have negative thoughts, answer these questions: 1) What upset me? Example: ”I’m upset that they don’t want to spend time with me.” 2) How did that make me feel? Example: “It makes me feel like I’m unimportant, like they secretly hate being around me.” 3) What do THEY need to feel seen and safe? What do I need to feel seen and safe? Example: “They need to be seen by their friends, and to feel that our relationship is safe” and “I need reassurance and quality time.” 4) Now share steps 1-3 with your partner. Example: "I felt upset and was passive-aggressive the other night when you hung out with your friends. I was worried that you might not enjoy spending time with me, but I understand that you need time with your friends too. I just need some reassurance from you sometimes, and I'd like to spend some quality time with you as well. At it’s core, Codependency stems from a lack of Self. And so it doesn’t matter actually how it manifests for you in behavior. The recovery is all linked to building a solid sense of and relationship to that capital “S” Self. So every time you listen to yourself and act on what you truly want, desire, feel, need - you’re telling that small muted and greyed out sense of self that you are there to listen, you are there to learn, that you trust you, and that you’ve got you. And every time you do that, that quiet voice gets louder. That connection gets stronger. That inner knowing - ie the relationship to that sense of Self - grows.

In childhood we experienced our parents struggling with holding space for our emotions & needs and translate that into "those aspects of me are too big for others to hold". As adults we will then engage in relationships with men and expect the same outcome. "My emotions & needs aren’t wanted here." We will struggle to be vulnerable, allow deeper connections to form & therefore truly fulfilling interactions to take place. We hold men at an arms length because "if I let this person in, they will see that too-muchness & leave"! The way out? 🚫 NO, you don’t want to wait for the knight in shining armor aka the dude with emotional intelligence to come around the corner and tell you that you are not too much! This is actually the thing that keeps us stuck in passivity. "Because all men are trash I will never know that I’m not too much!" 😭 This starts with YOU! I thought I found her, the perfect girl to fit my lifestyle, values, hobbies, get along with my kids, family & friends. But then I found out I wasn’t the guy that could truly show up well in a healthy relationship. She triggered the boy in me who was deeply anxious, still carrying pain from childhood and past relationships. It was like someone gave me the keys to a Lamborghini and I hadn’t learned to drive yet. We’d spend hours googling things like codependency, attachment styles, how to set boundaries in relationships and just ended up being more confused and overwhelmed at why it wasn’t working. So we broke up… we both decided that if our relationship wasn’t making us better and supporting our needs, we needed to end it. Finally, sick of my own bull shit, having already been through a divorce I decided to take my growth seriously. So I went to work on myself, I hired coaches, took courses and the classes I needed to step into the man that I wanted to be. It took A LOT for me to humble myself and recognize I needed help but I’m so glad I did. Then, we talked, I showed up better, she was amazed. But it wasn’t over… I had to learn to lead as well, because the reality was it wasn’t just all my fault. She had things she needed to work on too. But I had to learn to lead by example, not with criticism, passive aggressive tactics or acting out when I didn’t get my way. I had to learn real relationship tools that helped me vocalize my wants, needs and emotions in the right way. The truth is, not all of us are taught the relationship skills we need to properly care for those we love—but if you take it seriously, the skills can be acquired.
